Lynx

What in the hell was going on with Jaynee? I reread her texts, stomping down the stairs in the clubhouse. I could hear the tone of her voice, feel her withdrawing. Why did I care so damn much?

Leave it alone, man. Just forget about her and the kid.

“Lynx, are you feeling better?”

Hearing Amber, I exited out of my messages and put my cell in my back pocket. “Yeah. Thanks.” I went to kiss her on the lips as I usually did but ended up going for her cheek.

When I’d gotten back to the club, I was in a foul mood. Jaynee and Sadie had occupied my mind. Between helping them and visiting my mom, I was emotionally drained. Amber had wanted to take me to bed, but I’d told her I didn’t feel well.

She stared with a confused expression. “Everything all right?”

“Yeah, just got a lot on my mind. I’ll catch you later, okay?” I squeezed her shoulder then continued to the kitchen. I hoped I didn’t hurt Amber’s feelings. I wasn’t usually standoffish with the kittens. They were all my girls. I treated them well and gave them equal attention, so they didn’t think I favored one over the other.

It was easy to keep women at a distance and not get attached when I regularly had more than one available to take to my bed. Sometimes, I’d take two girls to my room when I was in the gutter after seeing my mom. They were a welcomed distraction from my woes.

I slapped a smile on my face at the threshold. “Morning, family.”

“Good morning, Lynx!” Sugar and Maddy chimed.

Storm, Track, and Ire grunted.

“I smell egg bake and cinnamon rolls.” I rubbed my hands together. “My favorite.”

Sugar handed me a mug of coffee. “Have a seat. I’ll serve you a plate.”

“Thanks, Sugar.”

“How are Jaynee and Sadie doing this morning?” Maddy asked with an assessing glint in her baby blues.

I cut my gaze at Sugar. The old ladies in this place told each other everything.

“I don’t know,” I replied.

“Sure you do. What did Jaynee say when you texted her?” Maddy was a persistent one and knew me too damn well. “I think you should’ve brought them to the club.”

“Angel, we aren’t a homeless shelter.” Storm took Birdie out of her bouncy seat and kissed her cheek.

“You’d turn away a mother and child? I don’t think so.” Maddy wrapped her arms around Storm’s neck and made faces at Birdie. “Daddy likes to pretend he’s a grumpy meanie, but we know better, don’t we, Birdie?”

I envied my brother and his family. Same with Raul and Dodge. Hell, Boxer’s baby was due in a couple of months. I was jealous of all of them. They had what I never would.

Did they know how lucky they were? Probably. In the MC lifestyle, none of us took anything for granted, especially not our loved ones.

“Lynx didn’t leave them stranded, Angel. He got them shelter and gave them money. What’d you want him to do, marry the woman and adopt the kid?”

Track chuckled. “Seriously, Maddy. The brother went above and beyond.”

“As usual,” Ire muttered while on his phone.

“Lynx did go out of his way for Jaynee and Sadie.” Sugar set my plate in front of me. “But we should’ve brought them with us.”

I groaned. “I offered and she refused.”

What did Sugar want me to do? Abduct them? I had no right to force Jaynee to do anything. Hell, she could’ve refused my help altogether, then we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
