“Then I’ll see you tomorrow night at seven.”

“Oh, one more thing. I don’t have a babysitter.” I couldn’t believe I was asking if I could bring Sadie to work.

“That ain’t my problem, Dolly. I run a club, not a daycare.”

“She’s a really good girl. You won’t even know she’s here.”

He eyed Sadie. “Good, huh?”

She buried her face in my neck. “Let’s go, Mommy.”

“Yes. I’ll make sure she stays in the dressing room.” Worst mother ever, but what choice did I have?

He waved me off. “Fine. Keep her hidden.”

“Thanks!” I made my way toward the exit. “We’re one step closer to moving to the beach, sweet girl.”

“I want Zander,” she whimpered.

God help me. If she started crying again, I’d crumple to the floor. What was it about him that was so wonderful? I didn’t even know what he did for a living. He could be a criminal for all we knew.

Just five days, Jaynee. Five days and you’ll be on a bus to Miami.

Zander and Minnesota will only be a blip in our lives.
