“And why do you want to be a kitten?” The chick’s hair piled high on the top of her head reminded me of cotton candy. Not much bothered me about women. I loved them all in every shape and size. But I wasn’t sure I’d like seeing all that pink when she was on her knees sucking me dry.

Of course, some of my brothers didn’t care about hair color so long as their needs were met. I wouldn’t count her out just yet.

Pinkyblew a giant bubble, showing her talented tongue, then popped it. “I like sex.” She smiled, making all kinds of noises with her chewing. I bet she also was loud when getting fucked.

I marked a check next tolikes sex. It was necessary, after all, given the job. “What else? As a kitten, there are no attachments. You can say no to one of the members if you’re not feeling it, but you can’t only be with one. Say no too many times, you’re out.” Our kittens had the right to say no, but none of them ever did, because we treated our girls well.

“Honey, don’t need to worry about me saying no.” She gazed at the panel of members lustfully. “You all are hot as hell.” She fanned herself.

A couple grunts of approval came from both ends of the banquet table. I recognized them as from Track and our newest patched member, Copper.

Wolf and Ire were also present. Neither wanted to attend but, as single council members, had no choice. Grizzy stayed quiet. It was plain as the day was long that he had a thing for Libby, though he hadn’t admitted it. She’d made it clear in the beginning that she wanted to be free to be with whoever she liked.

It didn’t surprise me that Grizzly had fallen for Libby. She was a sweetheart, nurturing, and submissive in bed. Storm had told the council he had a messed-up childhood. Prez hadn’t given us details. I never let myself imagine how messed up. For as quiet and closed off as Grizzly was… Well, I hated to think what might’ve caused him to be that way.

And Art, the club’s secretary? He had wormed his way out of being here. He occasionally went to Mason City, Iowa, to provide his talents to our allies, the Fallen Soldiers MC. This trip was to ink the enforcer’s back. Maverick had burn scars from when his army unit was under attack in Afghan. He wanted them covered, and Art was the man to do it. He’d drawn a kickass design of the Reaper on a battlefield to cover Maverick’s back. I couldn’t wait to see a picture of the finished masterpiece.

I nudged Libby. “What do you think?”

She studied the prospective kitten with a discerning eye. Libby managed all the club girls, so she had a say in who we selected. After the crap with Misty, we were cautious about bringing new women into the clubhouse. Most of all, Storm and Dodge, whose babies had been taken by the bitch a couple of months ago.

With so many brothers claiming women or getting married, we didn’t need many kittens. Not like a couple of years ago. We were only hiring one to add to the litter and keep a backlist of prospects if we needed to hire another later.

“Hmm…” Libby perused the application for the third time. Pinky, or rather Becca, had a clean record and no STDs—both required to be a kitten and get an interview.

Grizzly would thoroughly vet the candidates who moved on to the second round of the interview process before meeting Storm and Maddy. Prez gave the final word. Maddy would be present too, because he valued his wife’s opinion. As he said many times,A happy queen makes for a satisfied king.

“How do you feel about children?” Libby asked Becca. It was an interesting question and one I hadn’t heard asked before.

My phone pinged on the table. Jaynee’s name flashed at the top. I snatched it right away, hoping no one saw.

It was after three in the afternoon. I tried not to wonder how the job hunting had gone. It wasn’t easy for a curious guy like me. I’d promised myself I wouldn’t bug her anymore, so I’d refrained from texting her.

I opened the message, tuning out Becca’s reply.

Jaynee: Got a temp job! You can stop worrying now. Thanks for everything.

Lynx: Congrats. Where at? You still moving?

Why did I go there? I didn’t want to know anything about Jaynee and Sadie. I wasn’t invincible. That mom and daughter duo made me soft and my boundaries weak. I couldn’t let any attachments form. I had to keep my head straight to protect myself and them.

Jaynee: Stop, Zander. This is a courtesy text and the last.

She was right. I was acting like they were my responsibility. All those years watching my mom struggle to get by and enduring my old man’s beatings made me a little overprotective in this situation. I needed to let it go.

Lynx: My bad. I wish you all the best. You and peanut take care.

Jaynee: Thanks! You take care too. Bye.

I stared at her text, feeling weird. Sort of like I lost my puppy—my best friend.

“You okay?” Libby whispered.

I raised my head. Every pair of eyes was on me. I hadn’t noticed when the talking stopped.
