“Fine. Let’s just wait and see what she says next. Assuming it is a chick.”

“It is,” Sugar and Tina said at the same time.

Five minutes passed with no reply. I was beyond irritated, so I put the cage in reverse and headed toward the airport as my gut told me to. Sugar and Tina said nothing, but I saw their smirks in my peripheral.

I hated driving a cage in the Twin Cities. On top of traffic, there was always a shit-ton of road construction and detours during the non-winter months. On my hog, I could zip through the mess to get to my destination a lot faster.

A woman and child stranded at the airport didn’t sit well with me. My brothers would bust my ass for needing to rescue every damsel in distress. But this was different. I wasn’t out to dazzle the lady with my charm or seduce her. This damsel had a kid… assuming Sugar and Tina called it right.

At a stoplight, I checked my phone again. “Think she got in touch with her friend?”

Sugar arched brow. “No telling, considering you stopped the line of communication.”

“Yeah, she might be in tears right now,” Tina added so helpfully, making me feel worse. A woman crying was my greatest weakness.

“Fuck.” I typed out a message.

Lynx: I’ll give you a lift. Black SUV. American flag on the antenna

Unknown: Hell no. I don’t know you. Trying to reach my friend...

Lynx: They’re not answering?

Unknown: No

I glanced at Sugar. “This is weird. Her friend isn’t answering.”

Lynx: I won’t hurt you

Unknown: That’s what all killers say

Lynx: I’m not a killer. You and the kid will be safe

Unknown: How do you know I have a kid? Weirdo!!

I growled. “Christ, this is a pain in my ass.”

Sugar took my cell from me to read. “You’re just hangry. Hmm, you do sound like a weirdo.” She handed it back.

The light turned green. Not even a block down, I stopped at another red light and replied.

Lynx: Lucky guess

Unknown: Oh

Lynx: Be there in 15. What terminal?

Unknown: This doesn’t feel right

No kidding. It didn’t feel right to me either. But I didn’t want Sugar and Tina up my ass about not helping a woman and child. To be fair, I was notorious for going out of my way to help women. If someone had helped my mom, maybe her life would’ve turned out differently.

Shit.

Stop being a dick, Lynx.

My piss-poor mood had to do with how much my mom’s health had deteriorated. Guilt ate at me for staying away so long. Fear of being sick like her nearly paralyzed me. I could very well be in a nursing home before I was forty-five too.

Fuck, I needed to help this stranded lady, but it didn’t sound like she wanted it.
