Lynx: Ok

Unknown: Ok?

Lynx: Yeah, just take the bus or an Uber

I put my phone back in the cupholder, done with the unknown texter. Later, I’d probably feel guilty for not pushing her to accept my help. Whatever. It was done.

“What happened?” Sugar asked.

“Nothing. She’s got it covered.”

“Check his phone,” Tina told Sugar.

I shook my head, trying to figure out which damn road to take so I could get us home. “You women are too much.”

My phone dinged as Sugar read the texts to Tina. “Oh my gosh.”

“What?” I snatched the device out of her hands.

Unknown: I don’t have any money

That fucking did it. No more nice, patient Lynx.

Lynx: What terminal?

Unknown: Are you sure?

Lynx: I’m all you got

Unknown: Terminal 1

Lynx: See you soon

“Now, you two busybodies”—I pointed at Sugar and Tina—“listen to me. We’ll pick up these people, take them to the friend’s place, and be done. Nothing more. Nothing less.” I handed my phone to Sugar. “Call Ryder and let him know what’s going on.”

“Whoa. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this way before.” Sugar cautiously took the cell.

I squeezed the steering wheel. “Sorry.” Being a dick wasn’t my way. Not to women, anyway. “I’ve got a lot on my mind.”

Kitten interviews were tomorrow, and I needed to hire another server for The Bullet. And decide when I’d go see my mom again. I didn’t need to pile more on my already full plate.

And I was salty about not getting my Bacon Blucy.

Tina rubbed my arm. Her quiet demeanor helped to calm me as I tuned out Sugar talking to Ryder.

How could this lady not have money for an Uber if she had just arrived at the airport?

Then again, my mom only had enough money for two bus tickets when we left Texas to live with her sister in Mankato.

I exhaled a strenuous breath, taking the airport terminal exit. Why does shit like this happen to me? None of my brothers ever got tangled up rescuing a woman.

But me?

I was the epitome of Minnesota-fucking-nice.

“Don’t get too friendly with this chick,” I told Sugar and Tina. They were the sweetest women with giant hearts. If a child was involved, I hated to imagine what they might insist on doing.

“We need to feed you, Mr. Grumpy Pants,” Sugar replied.
