“As a stripper?”

His disapproving tone put me on the defense. I might’ve wanted out of the gig, wanted more out of my life and for Sadie, but he had no right to judge me for the way I provided for my daughter.

“Topless dancer, asshole. Don’t you dare sit there all smug and judging with my child in your arms.” I threw back the blankets, swung my legs over the edge, and stood. A rush of cold air hit my bare chest. My face flamed red hot when the realization hit me that my silk robe was open, exposing all of me. I quickly tied the belt, then glared at Zander.

“Get back in bed,” he ordered, but I didn’t miss the lust in his eyes.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do.” I cradled the back of my head, feeling a significant bump. “I’m taking my daughter and leaving.”

Zander rose from the chair. “No, you’re not. Get your fine ass back in bed, Jaynee. I’m not asking you. I’m telling you.”

Fine ass? If he hadn’t just been an asshole seconds ago, I might’ve melted.

“Who in the hell do you think you are?” I whisper-shouted to avoid waking Sadie. “So you helped a poor, pathetic topless dancer and her child. You met your good deed quota for the century. We aren’t your problem.”

“Get in the bed, woman.” He shuffled toward me, getting in my personal space.

“You don’t intimidate me.” But he did. My heart hammered in my chest, worse than it had last night with the masked bandits.

Sadie stirred and blinked her eyes open. Her little mouth went wide as she yawned. The second she saw Zander, she smiled. Then her joy disappeared when she noticed me.

“Come here, baby.” I reached for her with grabby hands.

“No. I want Zander.” She looped her arms around his neck.

My heart shattered.
