Lynx

I heard the cracking of Jaynee’s heart when Sadie rejected her.

Dick move, Lynx.

If Jaynee throat punched me, I wouldn’t blame her.

In my defense, I’d been all Sadie had to depend on after her ordeal. She’d woken up after I carried Jaynee up to my room when we got back to the club. Naturally, she was scared and confused. Tina had helped me calm her down in the kitchen while Patch took care of Jaynee’s head.

After some milk and a cookie, Sadie relaxed, although she stayed glued to me. It was understandable, being in an unfamiliar place with strangers all around her. Even though I was a stranger too, she seemed to trust me. She wouldn’t even let Tina take her to the bathroom. Sadie had insisted I do it. To my relief, she only wanted me to stand outside the stall door and made me pinky promise to not leave.

Pinky promise. That had been a first for me. The cutest damn thing I’d ever done with a pint-sized gremlin like Sadie. She could depend on me to keep her safe. I’d move mountains to keep my promise.

Jaynee’s lip trembled, her amber eyes glimmering. Shit, I couldn’t take it if she cried. I needed to do something to smooth things over with her. If she took Sadie and ran, I’d chase after them. They weren’t safe with that dickhead Richard wanting them back in Vegas. He proved he’d go to any length to get what he wanted.

Storm had pounded the information out of the guy Grizzly and Maddox had captured. Prez had maintained more control than I had, letting the dude live after he’d given up Richard the dick.

“Hey, peanut? How about you and Mommy get cozy in the bed, and I’ll get you both breakfast.”

Sadie peered at me. For a preschooler, she sure was thoughtful and cautious. Her intense eyes studied me carefully. I could almost hear the wheels turning in her head. She obviously had a massive brain.

“Breakfast in bed with a tray? Like a princess?” she asked, in the sweet voice I’d somehow grown to adore in the last several hours. What was happening to me?

I glanced at Jaynee, who stared in awe at her daughter.

I nodded and took Sadie to the bed. “Yes, ma’am. Only the finest for a princess.” I set her down and tucked the covers around her lap.

The little peanut beamed. “Oh, goodie!” She clapped and bounced, patting the spot beside her. “Come on, Mommy. Zander’s bringing us breakfast.”

Jaynee remained unmoving as if shellshocked.

“Hey.” I rubbed up and down her arm, placing my other hand on her hip. “Get into bed.”

“What are you doing?”

Her question surprised me. There was something more behind it, but I’d play it off as if she meant it literally. “Gonna bring you girls breakfast.” I guided her to the other side of the bed.

“No, what are you doing? This isn’t happening, Zander. You, me, us.”

Shit, I was right.

Fuck if I knew what I was doing. This, being withthem, just felt right.

Of course, she could never know what was going on inside me.

“You’re reading into it, Jaynee. I’m not looking for anything more than friendship.” A pang pierced my chest when relief sparked in her eyes. “You have a nasty knot on the back of your head, and you were drugged. Let me be the nice guy that I am and take care of you and Sadie.”

“But you don’t have to.”

I tilted my chin. “You always this damn stubborn?”

Sadie giggled. “Mhm.”

“Nothing will happen, Zander.”

“Stop talking.” I placed my hands on Jaynee’s hips. My palms tingled as I pushed her to sit on the bed. “You need to rest.”
