He bobbed his head. “I started to after the Black Friday event last year. I shoveled the snow off her sidewalk and driveway for three weeks and took her groceries before she let me inside her house.”

“That’s really nice of you.” No wonder Ava had told me she didn’t need my help anymore.

“It was awkward at first. She didn’t talk much, so I fixed everything that needed to be repaired in the house. Then I moved on to painting and refinishing her wooden floors. It’s like a new house now.”

I shouldn’t be shocked, but Ire only ever kept to himself. He stayed closed off from women and, to some extent, his MC brothers. He and Grizzly were the biggest loners in the club, both due to their childhoods.

“How’s Ava doing now? It’s been a couple of months since I last dropped in on her.”

He lifted his head, his features softening. “Really good. I take her to the grocery store every Sunday during the slow time and have supper at her place a couple of times a week. We’re friends. She trusts me, but we’re just friends.”

Freaking friend-zoned. I knew all about that with the woman in my bed.

Amber entered the kitchen and made a beeline for me. She didn’t look happy.

I jerked my chin. “Hey, Amber.”

She placed her hands on her hips. “Who’s the woman in your bed?”

“I don’t like your snippy tone.” I stood from my chair. “I’ll catch you later, brother,” I told Ire, then went to collect the tray of food Tina assembled. It was a masterpiece with all the fixings, including a small bouquet of flowers. Where’d she get them from?

Amber followed. “Who is she, Lynx?”

“None of your business,” I shot back, proof my patience was thin. The kitten had better watch it, or I’d put her firmly in her place. “If you all are gossiping about her, stop.”

“Gossiping? I saw her with my own eyes when I walked in on her and the kid.”

I turned on her. “You went into my bedroom?”

She scowled. “I wanted to wake you up the way you like, with my lips around cock.”

“Oh, dear.” Tina covered her mouth with her hand.

“Fucking hell, Amber. I don’t need this complication. Stay away from her and the kid.” I picked up the tray, kissed Tina on the cheek, and stalked out.

“Is she your woman?” Amber whined, which was so unlike her.

“No,” I shouted over my shoulder.

This possessive side of Amber didn’t sit well with me. I imagined she took up arms for her and the other kittens. A new woman in the club meant one less member for them to have to themselves. The club wouldn’t require them if every guy claimed a woman. If I wasn’t worked up over Jaynee, I might shed a tear at the thought of no kittens in the club.

I went upstairs to my bedroom. With each step, my stomach tightened as I sensed Jaynee’s aura. Aura? Such a word never entered my mind regarding a woman. Hell, the club girls had nothing to worry about with Jaynee. She’d friend-zoned me as she should’ve.

I was where I wanted to be, needed to be.

Or so I believed.

When I thought of Sadie sleeping in my arms, the cute little sounds she made in her sleep, there was an ache deep inside my soul. Storm had been right when he called me a family guy. I’d deny it until blue in the face to anyone but him. The real Lynx, Zander Quinn, dreamed of having a wife and family. I fantasized about it more than I would ever admit.

I exhaled a deep breath. Slapped a dorky grin on my face and opened the door.

Jesus Christ, hold it together, Lynx.Don’t get attached.
