Jaynee

Sadie happily played a princess game on my cell phone, snuggled into my side. I drank her in, grateful to be close to her again. After Zander left, I apologized for last night and promised to never take her there again. We hugged. I smothered her with kisses.

All was right, mostly right, in my world until we got a visitor….

A jiggle of the doorknob put me on alert. When it opened, a beyond gorgeous woman appeared.

“Oh, I thought—” She blinked rapidly, a look of befuddlement on her face. I didn’t want to imagine who she was or her intentions before finding us in bed instead of Zander.

Perfect Pixie checked me out with a critical eye. Luckily my body was hidden under the blankets. I wasn’t embarrassed, not really. Just caught off guard.

“No, he went downstairs.” I returned her scrutiny, admiring her tiny, taut body, perky tits, and silky light-brown locks. I wrapped my arm around Sadie to hide her from this woman. It was a weird thing to do, but I was super paranoid of strangers since arriving in Minnesota.

It was sickening how many gorgeous women Zander had in his life. First Eve and Tina, and now this woman who was perfection in a small package. He wasn’t no average Joe himself. In another life, I’d be all about getting him into bed or bending over for him.

Chill girl. Chill.

When she opened her mouth, the softest voice passed her pouty lips. “Okay, sorry.” She backed out of the room and closed the door.

“Who was that?” Sadie asked in her sweet voice.

“Zander’s girlfriend” almost rolled off my tongue. “I’m not sure, baby.” If the pixie was his girl, the dude was about to receive a major ass-chewing.

“She’s pretty.”

“You are observant. I’ll give you that, Sadie.”

She giggled and went back to her game.

Pixie couldn’t be Zander’s girlfriend. He seemed smart enough to not put another woman in his bed if he had a woman. Why she came into his room was a mystery, one I didn’t care to solve. What Zander did in his personal life wasn’t my business. I might be a little curious. After all, he was hotter than any Marvel character I’d drooled over before meeting him.

I turned onto my side to watch Sadie play her game while we waited for Zander to return. It was sweet how he wanted to bring us, no Sadie, breakfast in bed. My head might be a jumbled mess, but I wasn’t so out of it I had missed his annoyance with me.

It was his tough luck. A casual hookup wasn’t something I was interested in. I needed to think of Sadie. She desperately wanted a daddy. If I allowed a man into our life, he needed to be the kind who stuck around. Someone who wanted a serious relationship, something lasting.

“Zander!” Sadie’s squeal jerked me out of my thoughts. Her glee bothered me. Didn’t little kids only behave this way with their parents? “I’m starving.”

I winced at her words.

“All growing little girls are hungry in the morning, peanut.” He set the tray over her lap. “Eat up. There’s a lot more in the kitchen if you want seconds.” He passed a mug of coffee to me but avoided eye contact.

I sat up and muttered, “Thanks.” More awkwardness, just what I needed.

“Mmm, yummy.” Sadie munched on a sausage. “Did you pick the flowers yourself?”

Zander chuckled. “No, Tina added it to the tray. Do you remember her?”

I drank my coffee, watching the two of them interact. They were like old friends.

A twinge of jealousy burrowed in my heart. It was my own fault I wasn’t part of the mix. I’d kept Zander at a safe distance to avoid getting attached. There wasn’t any point in getting closer when Sadie and I were moving the first chance we got.

“Yup, she’s nice. Does Tina have kids?” Syrup dribbled down Sadie’s chin.

Zander quickly grabbed a napkin and wiped it before I could. “She does. Two kids. Maybe you’d like to meet Valerie when she gets home from school later this afternoon. She’s nine.”

“I don’t think so,” I blurted before taking his suggestion into consideration.
