“It’s a free country. If you do, in fact, know anything about KLMC, you know Winters is their territory.”

“True. We don’t want any trouble.”

I wiggled my glass in his face. “All I’m after is a drink, not trouble. You can leave deputy—” I eyed his patch. “Stanely.”

A guy at the end of the bar laughed. “Sonny, don’t give the lady a hard time or she might sic the bikers on you.”

Great, my private moment just went up in smoke.

“That’s what I’m concerned about. I don’t want to end up like Dane Miller.”

Oh shit. Dane Miller was Maddy’s ex-boyfriend. I didn’t know the details, but I knew Storm ended him for his involvement with the Dirty Hunters and what he’d done to her. The nomad MC had taken her, along with Hero and Roja. They’d also killed AJ, one of the club’s young prospects. Now that I thought of it, Sonny was to blame for Hero spending time in jail.

“Weren’t you the idiot who planted drugs on one of the Knights? I thought you were fired?”

Sonny raised his brows. “Is that what those dirty bikers told you?”

“Don’t bullshit me, Deputy Stanely. My daddy is the sheriff in Bastion. I know more than you.”

“Damn, Sonny, this one is feisty.” The man at the end of the bar drained his beer. He threw a few bills down and stalked out. He stared at me as he went out the door.

“Finish your drink, Mrs. Knight, but don’t go driving if you’ve had too much.”

“I’m not drunk.”

“I know about your momma. I’m surprised you drink alcohol at all.”

I jumped off the stool and nearly punched him in the face for mentioning my dead mother. “Don’t you have something better to do, like passing out parking tickets on Main Street? Or how about planting drugs on innocent people?”

“Touchy.” He grinned, seemingly proud he got a rise out of me.

“Fuck off.” I grabbed my purse and stormed out of the building. Why in the hell did I think coming here was a good idea? Was there nowhere I could go to be alone to wallow in self-pity?

“Leaving so soon?” The guy from in the bar was leaning against the side of the building. He pushed off the brick wall and came toward me.

I ignored the creep and went to my car. There was nothing to be afraid of with people out and about in the middle of the day. Still, I wanted to get back to the compound where I was safe and had protection.

“It’s just like you outlaw bikers to think your shit don’t stink. You think you’re better than the rest of us, dontcha? Doin’ as you damn well please like you rule the world.” He rolled his hands into fists.

What was with this guy? I got into my car and locked the door. He stood there watching me with steely eyes. It was like he knew me, but I’d never seen him before. I turned the key in the ignition, put it in drive, and pulled away from the curb.

The Jack and Coke had helped me relax. I was so stressed out with Art after me and Justin’s paternity test weighing on me. My life had never been easy or uneventful. I envied the people who complained about boring, ordinary lives. They had no idea how lucky they were.

Halfway home, my phone rang with Mickey’s name appearing on the screen.

I really didn’t want to talk to her, but I didn’t have a choice. She might have news about Jax, who might be my nephew. Or she could be calling about Markey.

I answered the call. “Hey, Mickey.”

“Eve, I can’t believe this.”

My throat constricted. “Believe what?”

“Justin called me. Did you know he was going to call? Oh my God, Eve, I can’t believe it.”

“I sort of knew. He asked for your number, but I wasn’t sure he’d go through with it.” Men could be as much of a mystery as they claimed women were. Just because Justin wanted Mickey’s number meant nothing. He could’ve chickened out on calling her.

“Well, he went through with it this morning. He sounded the same.” She sighed into the phone. “Does he look the same?”
