I scanned the room as I forced myself to not jump out of my chair and draw attention to me. My heart hammered against my ribs, my armpits sweating. I could hear Storm and my dad shouting:you had one job!

Fuck, where did she go?

“I’m right behind you.” The most alluring, seductive voice wrapped around my throat and stole my words.

Brynne? Had she heard my thoughts?

She came around my side and leaned her hip against the table. Christ, this was bad, so fucking bad. Seeing her up close, close enough to smell her, would be the death of me.

I stared into her amber-colored eyes. They reminded me of whiskey, warm and spicy, but there were also bold hints of mischief and determination in her depths.Kill me now.

“Cat got your tongue?” The corner of her mouth quirked up like she knew she’d stolen the air from my lungs just as she’d planned.

“Qué?” What was I doing acting like I didn’t understand English? Saving my ass. I couldn’t blow my cover. Fuck, this was bad.

“Oh.” She pulled away from the table and sat down. “You don’t speak English?”

I shook my head and threw up a prayer for her to go away.

“Was that Spanish? I only know German.” She twisted her plump lips and tapped her nail against them. “Sorry for my rudeness. If you knew me, you’d know I always know what to say in every situation, except now. My dad calls me a quick-witted, smart-ass.” She laughed to herself. “He’s proud I’m more like him than…” Her voice trailed, but I knew she almost said, than my mom.

Instantly I hated her dad more than ever before. Tina was a kind, caring, and loving woman. Brynne should want to be like her, not like her abusive fucker of a dad.

“Look at me prattling on when you don’t understand a word I’m saying.” She got serious and put her hand to her chest. “Brynne, my name is Brynne.”

Christ, she was stunning. “Brynne.” I let her name roll off my tongue as I played along. Nothing ever felt more sensual than saying her name. Not that this was the first time I’d said it, but with her mere inches away and the semi in my jeans, it was different and way wrong to be turned on by my step-sister.

“Good.” She shot me a brilliant smile. “What’s your name.” She put her hand on my shoulder and patted it. “Your name.”

“Joseph,” I replied, giving her my birth name.

“Joseph. Wow, I like that,” she muttered. “What’s this?” She took one of the global leadership textbooks I carried around. “I guess this makes sense. What country are you from? Mexico?”

“Sí, México.” Again I replied with an honest answer. The less I lied directly to Brynne, the better. Not that I had ever lived in Mexico. I was born in America, and so had my dad. It was his grandparents who lived across the border.

“Our classes must be on opposite sides of campus. No wonder I hadn’t noticed you before.” She studied me with a heated gaze. “Do you understand me at all? I’d hate to talk about stuff if you don’t understand me.” She hiked her eyebrow. “You don’t look like a first-year student.”

“I, I understand, little bit,” I replied with an exaggerated accent.

The apples of her cheeks turned pink as she stared at me. “Will you have dinner with me tonight?”

“Qué?” Was she out of her mind asking a guy she didn’t know out? That was plain stupid and dangerous.

“Dinner.” She picked up my fork. “Food. Eat. With me.” She patted her chest. “I’d really like to get to know you better.”

Oh, fuck me.

Wait. Maybe this wasn’t so bad. If I allowed her to get close to me, capturing her after graduation wouldn’t be as difficult. I could easily lure her away if she trusted me.

Storm and my dad might not like it, but I think it could work to our advantage.

“No, sorry.”

“Of course, you probably already have plans.” She fidgeted with the fringe on her shorts. “What about brunch tomorrow? Or we could do lunch. Or dinner.”

Dammit, did she have to be so persistent? If she only knew who I was to her, she wouldn’t give me the time of day.

“I’m totally open.” She waited with bated breath for my reply, then grimaced. “Sorry. Am I being pushy?”
