Laura’s eyes raked over Mickey. Women could smell cheating a mile away. I’d never dare to betray Eve. Not that the thought ever entered my mind. Eve was it for me. I didn’t want anyone else.

But I knew Justin wasn’t happy with Laura. He’d married her, thinking he’d do the right thing because he’d knocked her up. I’d tried to talk him out of it. No man should marry a woman if he didn’t love her.

“Son of a bitch,” Mickey whispered. “He’s married and has a kid?” She put her hand on her head and blew out a breath. “I’d really liked that asshat.”

I flicked my gaze at Raul, who was shaking his head.

“I’ll get Eve for you.” I darted out of the bar. I wanted no part of that drama.

“Thanks.”

I entered my bedroom. “Baby?” Eve was curled into a ball on the bed. I sat beside her and kissed her cheek. “Mickey’s here.” I brushed her bangs to the side. Her face was blotchy, her eyes red and swollen. It broke my heart to see her this way.

“I look like hell. Would it be okay if she came up to your room?”

“Anything you want.”

She raised to a sitting position. “Hold me, Matt.”

I took her in my arms. She straddled my lap, snaking her hands around my waist.

“I’m sorry about all this, sugar.”

“It’s not your fault. It’s his.”

“But I never wanted to hurt you.”

She reared back. “You didn’t. He did.” She cradled my face. “Don’t you understand? My dad made me choose. Not you. You went there out of respect. Even I didn’t want to go, but you were unrelenting.”

“I want to do right by you.” Eve was the first woman to make me wantmore. We might have gone from zero to sixty within ten minutes of meeting at The Bullet, but the moment I set eyes on her, I knew she was the one.

She smiled weakly. “You did, Matt. Standing up to my father showed me how much you care about me.”

“I adore you, sugar.” I kissed her nose. “I want to make you happy.”

“Then keep doing what you’re doing.” She kissed me, stealing my breath away.

There was no denying it. I was falling in love with Eve Hendricks.

Her father had better find it within himself to accept us, because I had no intention of ever letting her go.

Eve

It’d been a couple of weeks since Matt and I had seen Johnny. Judging by the scowl on his face, my little brother hadn’t forgiven our father for being a “dick.”

We were in the clubhouse’s kitchen eating pizza. Matt had to work late tonight. He didn’t elaborate on what kind of job he’d had to do. I also didn’t ask.

Before I’d agreed to move in with him, he’d told me I wasn’t privy to club business and shouldn’t question him. Learning the ways of the MC had given me pause. There was some misogyny I didn’t care for, like the old ladies and kittens being expected to keep their mouths shut—that wouldn’t be easy for me—and to do as they were told, never speak against a member, or betray the club. It’d been a lot to digest.

Matt had also told me that if I didn’t think I could handle being in the dark and following the rules, he wouldn’t try to stop me from leaving.

It hadn’t taken more than a day to make my decision. I cared too damn much for Matt to walk away. I accepted him and the life he lived, along with his club. Every one of the burly bikers treated me with respect. Not one had ever made me feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

I wasn’t going anywhere.

“Dad doesn’t even mention you,” Johnny grumbled with a full mouth. “It’s like you died too.”
