“Driving where? What happened? Do you need your brothers?” She sounded terrified like I was in danger or I might harm myself.

“No. I only need you.”

“Okay, son. Tell me where you are. I’ll come to get you.”

“I don’t need you to get me. I need you to talk some sense into me before I screw everything up.”

“Okay. I can do that.”

I exhaled a deep breath. “I got someone pregnant, and she might get an abortion.” I braced for her wrath.

“Okay, how much do you need?”

“What?” I yelled. “How much do I need? You think I want her to get rid of my baby? Fucking hell! What’s with women today?”

“Levi, calm down. You’re not calling me for money?”

“Fuck no, I’m not. I have my own money if I need to pay for a procedure.”

“Okay, you want the baby. Who’s the woman? You haven’t brought anyone around, so I’m surprised you want her to have the baby.”

“Jesus, I know. Sorry I flipped out.” I pulled over on the side of the road across from Hope’s apartment complex. My hands were shaking. I didn’t want to get into an accident. “I care about her.”

“Okay, that’s good. Why do you think she wants an abortion?”

“Because she told me, and she called the baby a mistake. My baby isn’t a mistake.” I hit the goddamn steering wheel. “My baby isn’t a mistake.”

“No, son. No baby is a mistake, just a sweet surprise. But sometimes, when a woman is overwhelmed and scared, we say things we don’t mean.”

“She’s been through a lot in the past twelve hours. I’ve tried to be there for her. You know, take care of her needs and show her she can depend on me.”

“Good, that’s very good. I have one question.”

“What?”

“Is she one of the club girls?”

“Are you joking right now? Does it matter if she is or isn’t?”

“It matters to me if they’re trying to trap my sons.”

“We’re talking about an innocent baby.”

“I understand, Levi, but I need to know if the woman is a club girl. Does she use? Fetal addiction is very serious. Maybe that’s why she wants to get an abortion.”

“No! No, it’s not a club girl, and Hope isn’t a druggy. She’s a nurse at the hospital!” I couldn’t believe the things Lady M said.

“Calm down. I’m sorry. I’m just trying to assess the situation. Where is Hope now?”

“In her apartment. We got into an argument.”

“And you left? Well, go back. How can she believe you’ll stick around for the long haul if you run out on her and the baby isn’t here yet?”

“Fuck! I knew I’d screw up with her. I don’t know how to get through to her. That’s why I called you.” I hit the steering wheel again. “I don’t want to lose her or the baby.”

“How far along is she?”

“We were last together at the end of May.”
