“Oh wow, so she’s around three months.”

“Yeah, almost thirteen weeks. The baby had a strong heartbeat on the ultrasound she had last night.”

“You were there for it?”

“Yeah, a crack head attacked her in the ER and knocked her out. Stitch was there. It’s how I found out about the baby. Hope let me be there for the ultrasound. It was the best show I’d ever seen.”

“Aww, I know what you mean. Why don’t you bring her to the farm, and I’ll take care of her?”

“I doubt she’d come.” I noticed the time; it was almost nine-thirty. “Fuck, I forgot about church. I gotta go.”

“Keep me posted.”

“Yeah.” I raced back to Hope’s to check on her and tell her I had a meeting to attend. Running to her door, I prayed she would let me in and not shut me out.

I knocked, then shot Cobra a text that I might be late.

“Hey.” Mercy opened the door. “She’s in her room, but now’s not a good time.”

“What do you mean?” I entered and went to Hope’s room.

“You listen as well as a bag of rocks. She’s sad, okay?”

“Hope?” I knocked, disregarding Mercy’s warning, and opened the door.

“Go away, Levi. I don’t have the energy to fight with you.” She sniffled and wiped her eyes. Shit, she had been crying.

“I’m sorry I upset you.” I crawled on the bed and spooned her. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. I keep fucking up.”

“It’s not all you.”

“It’s mostly me.” I placed my hand on her stomach. “I’m here for the long haul, Hope. You can count on me.”

“It’s not you that I’m worried about. It’s me, Levi.” She cried into her pillow. “I can’t do this. I won’t be a good mom. I’ll just screw up the baby.”

“I won’t let that happen.” I held her close, kissing her neck. “Together, we’ll make sure the baby grows up okay.” My phone buzzed in my pocket, but I ignored it. Hope needed me and I wouldn’t leave her for anything.

“Who’s messaging you?”

“Cobra, probably.”

“Why?” She sniffled. “Do you need to be somewhere?”

“I’m where I should be.”

She turned in my arms to face me. “Do you need to be somewhere?”

“Just a meeting.”

“Okay, go to it.”

“I’m not leaving you.”

“Why are you so sweet to me?” She rubbed her hand against my chest. “I don’t deserve it.”

“Let me be the judge of that.” I pressed my lips to her forehead. “I’m sorry I made you cry.”

“I’ll be okay. You don’t need to worry. I won’t run out to get an abortion.”
