“Nothing is as important to me as you and the baby.”

“You’re the first person to call me important.” A tear rolled down her face. “I don’t know how to be with you. I’ve been a loner my whole life.”

“We’ll go slow. Taking it one day at a time.” I cuddled her close. “Just give us a chance.”

“I’m afraid.”

Why did I feel like she never revealed her feelings to anyone?

“I’ll protect you, sweetheart. You don’t have to be afraid with me.”

“There’s a lot you don’t know about me.” She blinked as if trying to get her emotions in line.

“Yeah, the same with me. But we have time to learn everything there is about each other.” Try as she might, she wasn’t going to get rid of me. I wouldn’t abandon her. I was in it for the long haul.

“I don’t want you to miss your meeting. You should go to it.” She smiled weakly. “Please. I’ll feel awful if you miss it because of me.”

“I don’t want you to feel awful.”

“Then go to it.”

“Okay, I’ll only be a couple of hours. Text me a grocery list, and I’ll pick up whatever you want while I’m out.” My phone buzzed again.

“I don’t have your number.”

“Yes, you do. I put it in your phone while you were asleep.” I gave her a slow wink and pinched her chin softly. “It’s under old man.”

“Old man? But you’re not.” She smiled, picked up her phone, and swiped the screen.

“Old man is what a woman calls her guy in MCs. And you’re my old lady.”

She screwed up her face. “I don’t like that at all.”

“You’ll get used to it.” I dropped a kiss on her lips. “Are we okay?”

“Okay, for now. We still have a lot to talk about.”

“We’ll talk when I get back.” I stole another kiss. “Sleep, and when you wake up, I’ll be here.” I kissed her again, then hopped off the bed. “Send me a list too.”

“All right, all right, get going… old man.”

“I like the sound of that.”

“You’re a weirdo.” She laughed, snuggling into her pillow.

I ran out of her room and waved at Mercy. “Keep an eye on my woman.” I didn’t wait for a reply. Mercy didn’t need to be asked to watch Hope. She’d do it regardless because they were best friends. I just liked ordering people around.

In the car, I quickly texted Cobra I was on my way. I hoped they found where the asshole who hurt my girl lived.

I wanted the fucker to pay and for me to issue his punishment. I had pent-up aggression and anger I needed to unload. My fists needed to pound some flesh.

Even if Hope and I made a little progress, her words left their mark on my heart.

“You’re the first person to call me important.”

“I don’t know how to be with you.”

“I’ve been a loner my whole life.”
