My heart raced, my hands turning cold and clammy. Was this a PTSD episode?

Wait. I didn’t have PTSD, did I?

Breathe, just breathe.

I paced in Abe’s bedroom at his parents’ home. It hadn’t changed much since in the past decade: white walls, dark furniture, hunter-green comforter, and curtains.

Abe didn’t like clutter, bright colors, or pictures on the wall. We were very different in that regard. Nonetheless, he had kept a photo of us in his bedside drawer. He’d shown me the image of us kissing at Lake Carlos our first night here.

Where was he? Why was he taking so long to get home? I held my throat, feeling it constrict when the fucking woman’s moans echoed in my head, and Abe shouted,Fuck, yeah!

Chill, girl. You’re close to losing it.

I was on the edge of an epic freakout that I didn’t know how to stop it. It had to be because of that chick Justine who crashed my birthday party.

“Where are you?” I cried out as if I didn’t know they were having church at the hangar. He’d picked that location for me knowing we would take a pregnancy test after he got back. Abe had wanted the day’s events to be different from the last time. To create new, beautiful memories.

Could they help me forget the past? I hoped so, but all my insecurities were rising to the surface, no thanks to Justine. Justine. I hated her name. I hated her. Not because she’d been with Abe.

Okay, so I’d despise any woman who’d been with him, just as he saw red at the mention of my ex-boyfriend, Stein. We had a past that didn’t include each other, but now we’re back together. That woman should’ve never come to the farm. Abe had said they hadn’t been together in nine months. She just didn’t want to give him up.

Too bad, so sad. Abe Knight belonged to me.

“Karma?” Lady M knocked on the door. “I made chocolate chip cookies. Come have some with Nova and me.”

“Maybe later. Yanks.” My voice cracked. “I mean, thanks.”

“Is everything okay?” She knocked again.

Great, now I’d put Lady M on alert. She had a keen nose and the ability to smell a person’s emotions a mile away.

“Karma, open up.”

“Okay, coming.” I grabbed the pregnancy test and shoved it under my pillow. Exhaling a deep breath, I shook out my arms, then opened the door. “Yeah?” I smiled, but I doubted it was genuine.

“Honey, what’s going on?” Lady M scanned me from head to toe, searching for evidence something was wrong. “Remember, I’ve raised six kids. I’ll know if you’re lying.”

Since Abe and I got back together, my relationship with Lady M had gone back to the way it used to be before I left Fargo. The only difference was she treated me like an adult instead of a teenager. She didn’t mother me. Lady M treated me as an equal, grooming me to take her place as the queen. We had mutual respect and love for each other.

“I can’t tell you.” Why lie? She’d read right through me. “I want to. I just can’t.”

Her features softened. “Okay. I won’t pester you about it so long as you’re not hurt.”

“I’m not.”

“Well then, Nova is waiting downstairs for me.” She turned on her heel and took a slow step.

“Wait.”

“Hmm?” She peered over her shoulder like she knew I’d stop her.

“When Abe comes home, please send him up here right away.”

“You betcha.”

“And Lady M?”

“Yes, dear?”
