I was so damn happy that I almost smiled. I didn’t because Reign’s words gave me pause. If she loved me, why didn’t she come home? Did Keg have something on her?

Brushing my thumb lightly across her cheek, I enjoyed the feel of her satiny skin. She didn’t flinch or push my hand away. My chest tightened as the past roared back, sending my heart rate up several notches.

“You still love me?”

Reign

My heart slammed against my ribcage when he touched my cheek softly. I hadn’t felt any tenderness since the day I left him.

At college, I rebelled. Got wild with the new freedom I had. I partied and slept around to numb my emotions and help me forget Jonah. Leaving him had been the greatest mistake of my life. I couldn’t handle being away from him and definitely couldn’t go home. My parents had drained their savings for me to attend college. It would have broken their hearts if I had dropped out after the first semester. I let them believe I loved college, had tons of friends, and kept myself busy. Of course, it had all been lies.

And I failed anyway.

“You still love me?” His gray eyes sparkled like platinum. There was the cocky man I knew, but I saw the uncertainty and caution in his intense depths.

“You can’t do this, Jonah. I have to go back before Keg loses his shit.”

“Are you out of your mind? I’m not taking you back. I warned you what would happen if I caught you in my world.”

“I know what you said. You’re still annoying, I see.” I shivered, keeping my arms crossed over my chest.

“So are you, babe. Did getting knocked around kill some of your brain cells?” He reached into a tote bag on the floor. “What the fuck are you doing at the Hell’s Bells bar? And with the president? Jesus Christ, Reign. That’s disgusting.”

“Wow, since when have you become an asshole?”

“Since my girl left me. Here.” He handed me a sweatshirt and looked me over.

“Thanks.” My fight deflated. He wasn’t wrong, but he didn’t have to be a dick about it. I pulled on the hoodie. “Where are you taking me?”

“A motel.”

“You can’t. Please, you’ll make matters worse.”

“Worse than what he’s done to you? I swear I’m going to beat the shit out of him. Give him a taste of what he’s been giving you.” Jonah turned away as if the sight of me made him sick. Understandable considering the bruising on my face and fat lip. I didn’t like looking in the mirror.

“I wouldn’t hate it if someone taught him a lesson.” Or killed him.

“Yeah? Then why the fuck are you with him?”

“Not here.” I signed, adjusting myself on the seat. Why would I want to discuss this with the men in the front listening?

“We’ve got incoming,” the driver shouted.

I turned to peer out the back window. “That’s Keg. Keg’s coming.” I grabbed Jonah’s arm. “Stop the truck and let me out. You don’t know what you’ve done.”

“The fuck I don’t. I took back what was mine.” He jerked his arm out of my hands.

“You didn’t claim me. As far as Keg knows, I belong to him.”

“Are you trying to piss me off more than you already have?” he yelled, making me flinch at the coldness in his voice.

“Just please do as I say and stop the truck.” I kept my tone even and calm, but I could tell it didn’t defuse Jonah.

“Not happening. Now shut your damn mouth, woman!” He took his gun out. “Mason, get ready. This is what we expected. Maddox, speed up, and we’ll lower the windows.”

“You got it, boss.” Maddox slammed on the gas peddle. The force pushed me back into my chair. I remembered him from when I was with Jonah. He sure had grown up while I’d been gone. He had a twin brother named Markey; they were Jonah’s cousins.
