“Done?” I choked out the word. What had I said?

“Yes.”

“No, I’m… I’m sorry.” I tried to think back to what had just happened, but my mind was blank. Did I have an out-of-body experience? Had I briefly shut down as I would with Keg?

“Of course you are.” He stepped out, and I grabbed his hand.

“Jonah, please. Let’s talk.”

“I’ve got work to do. First on my list is retrieving your parents and granny.” He pushed my hand away.

“Jonah, please. I didn’t mean what I said.” I reached for him, but he jerked away. “I’m overwhelmed. Scared for my family. I didn’t mean it.”

“Okay.” He stomped down the stairs, taking my heart with him.

A sob hung in my throat, and my head pounded. I inhaled, then exhaled, taking a cleansing breath. I needed to regain control of myself.

“Why are you crying? Why is uncle Buff mad?”

I gasped in surprise and hid my face from Nova.

“Reign? Are you okay?”

I shook my head, clutching my stomach. No child should see me this way or have heard us arguing. Shame barreled down on me.

“I’ll get, Mommy.”

“No. Um…” My ears dialed into the front door, slamming. It kicked my ass into gear and sent me running down the stairs after Jonah.

“What’s going on?” Easton asked with a deeply furrowed brow. He glanced upstairs, then at the front door.

“Jonah, he’s leaving.” I swung the door open. “Jonah, wait!” I yelled, more tears streaking my face. My heart had never raced so fast. He was slipping through my fingers, and I could hold onto him.

I was losing him.

He didn’t stop or look at me as he jumped into his truck and drove off, kicking up rocks and debris.

“Jonah! Please stop!” I ran after him. Of course, I couldn’t catch him and only made a fool of myself. My knees buckled as I watched his truck speeding down the dirt road and fading into the distance.

An SUV blew passed me. It might have been Easton.

I turned around against my better judgment, curious to see who had been watching my drama. Cobra leaned on the porch rail with his arms crossed over his chest and a pissed-off expression. Karma, Lady M, and Ben were also there.

“Get inside,” Cobra shouted in a massive booming voice, pointing at the door like I was a child.

My face burned with humiliation, lifting off the ground. I didn’t want to listen but forced myself to go inside. The last thing I wanted was for everyone to think I was a troublemaker or doubt my feelings for Jonah. It was bad enough that the man I loved with every cell in my body walked away from me. He didn’t even try to hear me out.

Because you hurt him. Again.

What if he doesn’t forgive me a second time?

Buff

The goddamn woman sure knew how to pull the rug out from under me.

“Those are the exact words Keg told me after I said no. Are you going to take what you want too? Have you become a rapist since I’ve been gone?”
