“It’s your actions that matter to me. If I ask you to wait, you wait. If I tell you to keep quiet, you keep quiet. If I say drop onto your knees and suck me off. You. Do. It.” He moved closer to me. “It’s about actions, Reign. Words are empty.”

“I’m not a dog you can order around!”

“I don’t know. You’re sure acting like a bitch.” He took another step toward me. I couldn’t read him. He was furious with me, no question, but maybe even turned on.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to play this game or not. Angry sex was hot. Could that be what he was after?

“Good to know, asshole.” I pushed back to see where this went. “Do you really love me?”

He pushed me against the door, seething. “I do love you, as infuriating as you are. Never stopped loving you.” He brushed his nose down my jawline. “Why do you think I went after you?”

“Oh, right.” The haze of lust clouding my good sense cleared. “About that. Why didn’t you tell me you saw my parents?”

“Didn’t think it was important.”

“Not important? Unbelievable!”

“Your dad was a prick to me, just like always.”

“Lovely, calling my father a prick.” Those two never got along. But my dad had treated Jonah like he was a gang member, never showing him an ounce of respect. For my sake, Jonah had avoided my dad as much as possible. However, calling my dad a prick was unnecessary.

“Well, he is. And your mom begged me to find you. Is that what you want to hear?”

“Yes, if that’s what happened.”

“You old man went into debt to keep us apart. Gambled until they nearly lost everything so you could attend college in New York. How do you think they’ll feel when you tell them you flunked out? Proud? Not likely.”

“You son of a bitch!” I slapped him across the face. “Why did you come for me if you were going to treat me this way?”

“Because I love you!”

“This isn’t how you treat someone you love.” I tried to unlock the door. “Let me out.” I needed to get away from him and clear my head. We usually didn’t fight like this. Had three and half years changed us that much? Were we no longer compatible? My chest felt like it might cave in at the thought of never being with Jonah again.

“No. You disobeyed me.”

“Fuck you.”

“No, I’ll fuck you.” He grabbed my face in his hands and smashed his lips against mine. He tried to push his tongue into my mouth.

I battled with how to respond. Did I give in? Let him dominate and control me?

No fucking way. I was tired of being treated like a second-class citizen, my needs and desires ignored, my feelings disregarded. I put up with Keg because of the threat to my family, but I shouldn’t have to take it from Jonah.

“No,” I hissed, sealing my lips shut and clawing at his hands to set me free.

“What?” Jonah pulled back, a stunned expression.

“I don’t want you,” I lied. I did want him, but I couldn’t process whether this was a real fight or not. Keg’s abuse was fresh in my head. Jonah wasn’t him, nothing like him. I knew that, yet I didn’t. I needed a minute to breathe and recenter myself before I did or said something I didn’t mean.

“Don’t mess with me, Reign. I know you want me.”

I saw his face. Heard his voice. Bile burned my esophagus.

“Those are the exact words Keg told me after I said no. Are you going to take what you want too? Have you become a rapist since I’ve been gone?” My hands trembled at my sides, my body violently shaking as I fought not to break down.

His hands fell away in an instant. The hurt and shock on his face broke me and the floodgates burst. Tears streamed down my face as a catastrophic shift in the universe occurred.

“I’m done.” He moved me aside and opened the door.
