“Jonah, can we talk?”
“Reign—”
“Please give me a minute.” I touched his elbow, and he pulled away. “I want to apologize.”
“No need to.”
“Will you look at me?”
He turned around, his gray eyes darting around. “I need to meet Bone and Easton at your dad’s work.” He checked his phone. “He’ll be off soon.”
I bit my bottom lip. “Thank you for bringing my mom and granny here.”
He nodded, still not looking at me. Damn him for icing me out.
“Can we talk when you get back?”
“I don’t know what Cobra has planned for tonight. You’ll probably be asleep when I’m free.”
“I’ll wait up for you.” I cautiously touched his shoulder, and he didn’t pull away this time. “If we’re in your room, where will you sleep?”
“There’s plenty of places around here.” He finally looked at me. “Are you okay?” His question gave me a flicker of hope.
“No. I feel horrible.”
He swallowed thickly. “Do you need a doctor?”
“Not sick horrible. Emotionally horrible.” I stepped closer to him. “I hate myself for what I said. I didn’t mean it.”
“We’re under a lot of stress.”
“Yes, but that’s not an excuse to be cruel.”
“Yeah.” He dropped his gaze to his boots. “I don’t know what happened up there.”
“We were mean to each other.”
“Yeah, we were. I don’t know if I can—”
“If you can be with me?” Tears blurred my vision. “Do you regret coming for me?”
“No, not at all. I was going to say I don’t know if I can do this right now. There’s a lot to talk about. I keep hearing your words, and they’re tearing me up inside.” His gaze burned into mine. “He raped you, didn’t he?” he whispered.
“You’re right. Now probably isn’t a good time to do this.”
“Answer me.” He lightly gripped my waist.
“Would it change the way you feel about me?”
“No.”
“Then yes.” I squared my shoulders and braced myself for whatever he might say.
“Fuck. I’m so sorry.” He pulled me into his arms, stunning me. “Why didn’t you tell me yesterday? Last night in the shower or this morning before we had sex.”
“Because I wanted to be with you.” I melted into his embrace. “I didn’t want to ruin our time together.”
“If I’d known, I would have been not so… I don’t know, forceful.”
