“The MC prez who forced me to stay with him.”

“Oh my God.” She pulled back. “I’m without words. Tell me what you need. I’ll help you any way I can.”

“Thank you. All I need is to talk to Jonah and ensure my family is safe.”

“Yes, of course.” Something caught her eye behind me. “I think that’s him now.”

I pressed my hand to my chest and held my breath.

Would my parents and Granny be with him? It’d been over an hour since he took off like a bat out of hell. He had to have my family with him—if he was a man of his word.

“Come on.” She took my hand and led me out of the room.

“I’m nervous.”

“Don’t be. Everything will be okay.”

Her optimism didn’t convince me. I’d pushed Jonah too far.

We went onto the front porch. When my mom saw me she ran toward me, tears streaming down her face.

“Reigh. I never thought I’d see you again.” She held me tightly, squeezing the air out of my lungs. “I prayed for the day.”

“Me too.”

“Why have you called me?”

“Not out here, Mom. Let’s get you and Granny inside.” I kept one arm around her and went to greet Granny.

Jonah helped her out and grabbed their bags. “I’ll put these in my room. It’ll be tight, but I think you’ll all be comfortable.” He stalked away, avoiding eye contact with me.

“Thank you, Jonah,” Mom told him.

“My Reign. You look too thin.” Granny reached for my face. “Who hurt you?”

“Oh my gosh.” My mom gasped. “I hadn’t even noticed.”

“It’s chilly out. Let’s go inside.” I nudged them along.

I wasn’t ready to answer all of my mother’s questions. I wanted to speak to Jonah, but he didn’t seem interested in talking to me. Or looking at me.

Inside, I watched from the kitchen island as Lady M and Karma got my mom and granny situated at the table.

“We’ve already eaten supper, but there’s plenty.” Lady M smiled. “I have pot roast and all the fixings. How does that sound? Or I can make you a sandwich?”

“Whatever you have is fine. Thank you,” Mom told her. “You’re very gracious for welcoming us into your home.”

“It’s my pleasure.”

“Karma is part of the family which means so are you,” Karma said, smiling.

Sensing Jonah behind me, I peered over my shoulder. Our eyes met for a quick second, then he jerked his gaze away and left.

Not again.

I followed him to the front door. “Are you leaving again?”

He stopped with his hand on the doorknob but didn’t turn around. “Got work to do.”
