“My guess is FF.” Buff put the mask over his face.

“Alright, let’s get to the clubhouse so I can treat Bone’s burns.” Stitch infected my brother.

“What’d you give him?” I pointed to Spectre and Easton to help move Bone.

“Morphine for the pain,” Stitch replied.

“Damn. The pain that bad, Bone?” I winced, checking out his injuries.

“Like my skin is on fire and melting.” He closed his eyes. “Get me out of here.”

“Yeah, me too.” Buff lumbered away with Bill in tow. They looked like they’d been cleaning chimnies.

“Lady M is going to lose it.” Dad pulled out his phone.

“Don’t call her,” Bone shouted.

“She needs to know you’re both okay,” Dad told him.

“What the hell?” I growled.

“Tell her when you get home. Buff is fine, and so am I.” Bone shot our father a look.

“Fine.” Dad did as Bone requested and put his device away.

“You must have a death wish.” I shook my head. “You know how she is. Her children are her life. She’ll be furious you kept her in the dark.”

“Good, then she’ll know what it feels like.”

“The fuck you say?” I wanted to shake some sense into him.

“Enough.” Dad leaned toward me. “He must be delirious from the pain. Let’s just get him to the clubhouse. Lady M will understand.”

Bone said nothing.

I didn’t ask any other questions. Something wasn’t right, and it had nothing to do with Bone’s injuries.

Had he and Lady M had a falling out? An argument? First, he misses Thanksgiving. Now he doesn’t want our father to call our mother? This whole fucking day had been messed up from the start.

I couldn’t wait to get home to my girls and make sure they were okay.

Lady M and Bone weren’t my problems. I just hoped their shit didn’t spill over onto the rest of us.

I passed the joint to Lady M and blew out the smoke. I was limp as a noodle and calm. I hadn’t gotten high since freshman year when I’d gone off the rails, not knowing what to do with all the freedom I had.

Keg had weed and other drugs all over the bar, but I wanted nothing to do with them. Not even when I wished I could forget Jonah and be numb when Keg assaulted me.

Tonight was different.

My brain was on overdrive, making up a bunch of awful crap. I needed to stop imagining the worst for Jonah and my dad, or I’d be a basket case. So I’d gone to Lady M and asked if she had pot. Her red, languid eyes registered my request, and she darted to get her stash.

Although I was sure they wanted to, Karma and my mom refrained from indulging in cannabis. That was fine, more for Lady M and me.

“If he was dead, my soul would know it, right? I mean, if we’re soul mates, I’d know if his spirit left the Earth.” I heard myself talking but didn’t feel my mouth moving.
