“He’s not dead, baby.” Mom squeezed my hand. “They’re all okay.”

“Do you really believe that? It’s been a long time since they left, and not a single phone call to update us.” I sighed, putting my head on her shoulder. “No news is bad news.”

“No news is good news, is how the saying goes,” Karma said.

I waved her off. She didn’t need to correct me. I knew the saying, and it was wrong, wrong tonight anyway.

“A mother’s worst nightmare is her child dying before her. Parents aren’t supposed to outlive their children. But in the MC life, there are no guarantees. Tomorrow isn’t promised for any of us.” Lady M put the joint to her lips and inhaled. She held the smoke briefly inside her, then blew it out.

“Yes, I agree one hundred percent,” my mom said, combing her fingers through my long hair.

“I’ve made so many mistakes in my life.” Lady M went on like she needed to get stuff off her chest.

“We all have,” Karma told her.

“No, I’ve lied to and betrayed my loved ones. I’d do anything to protect my family, even kill.”

I lifted my head at Lady M’s words. What in the world?

“What are you saying, Lady M?” Karma asked.

Hope entered the room, stealing our attention. “Okay, I have some information, and it’s not the worst, but it’s not the best either.”

I sat forward. “What?”

“Tell me they’re okay.” Lady M put out the joint.

“First, I don’t know anything about Bill.” Hope looked from me to my mom. “I mean, Jonah doesn’t come up in the hospital records, which is fantastic. But I forgot your last name, so I couldn’t ask about Bill. I’m so sorry. I’ll try again.”

“And what about Micah?” Lady M asked.

Hope exhaled a deep breath. “He’s being treated for smoke inhalation and second-degree burns. Stitch is with him.”

Lady M jumped to her feet. “I need to go.”

“No, Momma. You’re staying here.” Jonah’s voice came from behind me.

“Jonah!” I stumbled over to him and threw my arms around his neck. “Are you okay? Hurt?”

“I’m okay, just dirty and tired.”

“Bill, are you alright?” Mom cried, hugging him.

I couldn’t bring myself to release Jonah to check on my dad. I assumed since he’d come with Jonah, he was okay. My priority was my man.

“What do you know about Micah?” Lady M came to our side. “Hope said he has second-degree burns.”

“Yes. Stitch is taking care of him. They’re at the clubhouse.” Jonah curled his arm around Lady M. “Try to be patient. Dad will be here soon. He and Cobra are dealing with the authorities.”

“Can I get you anything?” I asked.

“No, I’m okay. I’m going to take a quick shower before the others return.” He kissed my lips. “Go see your dad. I won’t be long.”

I reluctantly released him.

Jonah appeared okay, and I was grateful.

What caused the fire? Or was it a who? I’d ask Jonah the first opportunity I got, but would he tell me the truth? If he said it was club business, could I accept his answer?
