“No. The very first time I saw you. When I was up on stage with Ava.”

“Oh! I thought that, too. I didn’t think you’d notice me, though.”

“I noticed you, Becca.”

“I’m glad.” She seemed embarrassed by the turn the conversation had taken, and that was refreshing in itself. He was used to women who would milk him for every compliment he could dredge up.

He let it go for now but made a mental note to remind her as often as possible, just how hot he thought she was. “I am, too. But you’re still dodging the issue.”

“What issue?”

“The issue of Fred.”

She laughed. “He’s fine. He’s waiting at the airport for me, and he’ll get me home safely.”

“Will he?” He hated the thought of her driving in Oakland traffic in that thing. He was joking with her, but that car had to be at least twenty years old.

“Yes! Seriously, don’t worry. I like to joke, but I’m not stupid. I know he’s on his last legs. So, I never leave home without my Triple-A card.”

“And that’s supposed to make me feel better?”

“Doesn’t it?” She sounded surprised. “It means I won’t be stranded. If I break down, they’ll come out and fix Fred or they’ll tow us home if they can’t.”

“That’s great. But what use will your card be while you wait for them to come out to you? Are you going to use it to beat off the undesirables who want to prey on a stranded, beautiful, young woman?”

“Oh.”

He laughed. “Sorry. I don’t want to sound like I’m trying to beyourUncle Jacob.”

“You don’t.”

His smile faded. “What then?”

“I’m just not used to it – to having someone look out for me like that.”

He wanted to ask about the ex who’d run away from her, as she’d put it, but that could wait. “Obviously, it’s too soon for either of us to know for sure, but I think I’d like for you to get used to it.”

“You would?”

“Yes. Would you?”

“Hmm, would I like to get used to having someone who looks out for me?”

His heart hammered while he waited for her to answer her own question.

He could hear the smile in her voice. “I do believe I would. But only on one condition.”

“What’s that?”

“That that someone is you.”

He laughed. “Yes. I should have been clear that I was offering myself for the job.”

“Then, if you still want the job after I get back, you’re hired.”

“I will. I’ll look forward to it.”

“Oh, shoot!”
