A small laugh escaped his lips as he slid one arm around her waist and drew her against him. “You get more than a peck this time, Becca. If you want it.”

“I want it.” He knew she didn’t mean that the way that his body wanted to interpret it, but he couldn’t help holding her closer as he slid his fingers into her hair.

He pressed his lips against hers, wanting to take it slowly. But then her hands came up and tangled in his hair. Before he knew what he was doing, he’d claimed her mouth in a deep, slow kiss that made him feel like he was lost. Everything except the feel of her soft body against him, and the dance of her tongue against his, faded away. He took it deeper, no longer able to hold back.

She clung to him as he walked her backward until she was pressed up against the island. There was no way she could miss how badly he wanted her. His cock was hard and throbbing as it pressed into her stomach.

He caught his fingers in her hair and pulled her head back as he kissed his way down her neck. It was hard to resist the temptation to keep going – to close his mouth around the taut peaks of her nipples that called to him through her blouse. But he forced himself to trail his tongue back up over her throat until he claimed her mouth again. He groaned when she sucked his tongue; his cock ached, longing for her to give it the same kind of attention.

He slid his other hand down over her ass, holding her against that ache, wanting nothing more than to unfasten her jeans and get her out of them – to strip her naked and take her right there on the island. That thought brought him back to his senses. She wouldn’t go for that. She’d no doubt be horrified if she even knew he was thinking it. He gentled the kiss, let go of her ass and brought his arm back around her waist, and eventually lifted his head.

She was still clinging to him, her full, soft breasts still pressed up against his chest, her hips still rocking slightly against his – tormenting his aching cock.

Her cheeks were pink, and her eyes sparkled when she opened them, and breathed, “Wow!”

He brushed a strand of her hair away from her forehead. “Yes, Becca. Wow!”

She laughed. “I’ve been wondering when that was going to happen. What it’d be like. But I had no idea …” She shook her head.

“I had no idea either.” It was the truth.

She ran her finger over her lips, making him want to follow it with his tongue.

“Best kiss ever!”

He had to laugh. “Thank you.”

She let out a short laugh of her own, but she still looked kind of stunned. “That wasn’t me trying to give you a compliment, that was just me stating the truth.”

He ached when she ran her finger over his lips. “You have a sexy mouth, but I didn’t know that you could – that anyone – could kiss like that.” Her smile dimmed. “Am I just … I’ve had a couple of boyfriends. But …” She shook her head.

He hated the idea that she might be thinking that kiss was special because he had more experience than the guys she’d been with in the past. “I’ve kissed a lot of women, Becca.” Shit. That wasn’t the best way to start! But he’d said it now, and it was true, so he pressed on. “I’m a thirty-nine-year-old bachelor.” That was supposed to help explain himself, but it only made it sound worse. He gave her a rueful smile. “The point I’m trying to make is that … that kiss? Best ever for me, too.”

She met his gaze. “You’re kidding me, right?”

He shook his head solemnly. “I wouldn’t joke about something so serious.”

“Serious?”

He nodded, not sure how much he should say, but feeling very sure that he was going to get serious about her in a hurry.

He sank his fingers in her hair again and looked down into her eyes. “I’m very serious. And I’m thinking that perhaps we should relegate it to the second-best kiss ever?”

A small smile played on her lips as she looked up at him. Her gaze dropped to his lips before coming back up to meet his. “We can try.”

As he claimed her mouth again, he knew that they were going to succeed. Their first kiss had been amazing, but this second one felt deeper, more intimate. The element of surprise was gone, but it had been replaced by something that felt like understanding. At least, he hoped that she understood, that this one wasn’t just a one-off, out-of-the-blue type kiss. This was the beginning of something special.

After those kisses in the kitchen, Becca felt as though she had to be dreaming. Today had started out as a long and exhausting day of travel. The best thing about it – until Jacob had surprised her at the parking lot – had been all the free time that she’d had to sit and think about what their coffee date might be like tomorrow. She’d hoped that she’d perhaps get a kiss at the end of it, that perhaps he’d ask if she wanted to see him again.

Now, not only had he come to get her from Oakland – in a freaking plane, no less. But she was here with him, here in his huge-ass house! She was loving seeing him in his own environment. This house might be like something from one of those period dramas, but the way he lived in it made it feel less intimidating. He might be a Napa bigshot – a seriously wealthy and influential businessman, but he was just a guy, too. He’d bumbled around in the kitchen until she’d insisted that he let her take over. He’d fixed their drinks, while she’d reheated and dished up the meal that the cook had left ready for him.

They’d eaten in his study – that had to be her favorite room of those she’d seen so far – and there were probably dozens more of them that she hadn’t seen yet. She would have felt uncomfortable if he’d taken her into the dining room with its table for twelve and big fancy chandelier. But here in his study, she felt comfortable – especially since they’d eaten with their plates on their knees.

He smiled as he got up and took both their plates. “Want to take a walk outside?”

“I’d love to.”
