“Come on in. Do you want a coffee? I know it’s not quite what we planned but …”

He came into the hallway and closed the door behind him.

“Coffee would be great, thanks.” His hand came down on her shoulder and turned her back around to face him. “A kiss would be even better.”

“Oh.”

She went to him eagerly when he slid his arms around her waist. She could feel herself relax and she looped her hands around his neck and pressed herself against him. He felt so solid, so … reassuring. So right.

His eyes twinkled as they looked down into hers. “I missed you.”

She laughed. “It’s been less than twelve hours.”

He shrugged and dropped a kiss on her lips. “I still missed you.”

She went up on her tiptoes to kiss him back, loving the way his arms tightened around her to keep her close as he claimed her mouth in another one of those deep, lingering kisses of his. Last night, in his kitchen, she’d thought he might drive her out of her mind. This morning, in the comfort of her own place, those kisses might drive her to drag him to bed!

When he finally lifted his head, she pressed her nose against his. “I missed you, too.”

He looked so serious when she said that she had to wonder if there was something wrong. But there couldn’t be – he’d said it first, and she knew that he meant it. She did too.

“What?”

“I shouldn’t say this.”

“Say what?”

“That I don’t want to miss you tonight.”

A surge of excitement bubbled up in her chest. “I don’t want to miss you, either.”

“Then don’t.” He cocked an eyebrow.

A slow smile spread across her face as she nodded. It might be too soon, but it felt right. And hell, if she couldn’t figure out her money troubles soon, she was going to have to admit defeat and go home. She wanted to make the most of every minute she got with him first. “Okay.”

Chapter Ten

Jacob looked over at Becca as he pulled away from her townhouse. She looked so sad, it made him feel bad. He hadn’t planned to suggest that she should spend the night with him, but when she’d said that she didn’t want to miss him again tonight, he’d asked. He was thrilled that she’d said yes. But then he’d had to go and spoil it. It wasn’t as though he could have kept Fred’s demise a secret from her. She’d looked so hopeful when she’d asked if Slade had made it back. He'd known that she’d be sad, but she was taking it even worse than he’d expected. She looked heartbroken.

He reached across and took hold of her hand as he drove. If it meant that much to her, he’d get a new engine put in the damned thing and tell her that he’d found someone who could fix it. It’d be worth it to see her smile again.

As if she’d heard his thoughts, she gave him a sad smile. “Sorry. I don’t mean to be such a downer. It’s just … I’ve had a bit of a morning already. And now I know that Fred’s finally given out ...” She shrugged. “I’ll cheer up again in a minute.”

“It’s okay. As I said, you’re welcome to use the Range Rover until you figure out what you want to do. In fact, do you want to take a drive past the dealerships? You can see if they have anything that you like the look of.”

She blew out a sigh. “No, thanks. I … This is embarrassing – it’d be embarrassing to tell anyone, but especially you.”

He frowned. “You can tell me anything.”

She let out a short laugh. “I know. I feel like I can tell you – the person you are – anything. But you, you’re not just the person, you’re … your circumstances are different. You see, I’m not going to be able to just go and buy myself a new car. I need to sort out my money situation first.”

He nodded. He should have thought. “Of course, sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry.” She smiled again. “But do me a favor and let it drop? I want to hang out with you today like we said we would. But I don’t want my mess to hang over us like a cloud.”

He wanted to tell her that it didn’t need to hang over them – didn’t need to hang over her. He could blow that cloud away if she’d let him. But he knew better. She wouldn’t let him.

“Okay. I’ll let it drop on one condition.”
