“What?”

“Think about it, Becca. What are you forgetting?”

“I don’t know. What?”

He chuckled. “You’re forgetting that I don’t fly commercial, and if I get my way, you won’t anymore either. It won’t take all day to get there. It’ll only take a couple of hours in the jet.”

“Oh.”

He laughed. “But that’s only if you want to go. I’d love to. I can’t wait to meet your folks, but you’re the one who gets to decide when that happens. I’d like to suggest it when they call back, but only if you’re happy with it.”

She nodded slowly. “I do want you to meet them. It’s not that I’ve been hiding them from you or anything. It’s just that I wanted to give it a bit of time before I told them that I moved in with you – because it all happened so fast. I didn’t want them to worry. But now that they know, it’s probably better if you meet them sooner rather than later.” She smiled up at him. “Once they meet you, they’ll know that they have nothing to worry about.”

He dropped a kiss on her lips. “That’s what I’m hoping.”

“You don’t need to hope. You can know. They’ll love you. I mean, I do.”

“Not as much as I love you.”

Her phone started to ring again, and she raised her eyebrows. “Are you ready for this? My dad probably won’t be too friendly to start with.”

“I wouldn’t expect him to be. It’s my job to prove myself to him.”

“Aww.”

Jacob laughed. “You’d better answer. And is it okay if I suggest that we go next weekend?”

“Yes.” Becca couldn’t believe how lucky she was; lucky to have met him, lucky that he loved her, and lucky that he was so eager to meet her folks.

Jacob took a deep breath as Becca picked up her phone and answered with a smile. “Hey, Mom.”

He’d assured her that he wanted to talk to them – that he was looking forward to meeting them, and it was true. But he had to wipe sweaty palms on his pants. He was nervous. That made him smile. He was nervous because this was important to him. It was the most important thing in his world right now. He’d been wanting to meet her parents because he had a very important question to ask them. He knew for sure now, that Becca wanted to marry him, and he didn’t want to waste any time about it. But before he could ask her, he had to ask them.

“Yes, we’re both here. Hang on a minute while I put you on speaker.”

Becca took the phone away from her ear and hit the speaker before she set the phone down on the table. She raised her eyebrows at him, and he nodded. Yes, he was ready for this – and more than ready for what it would mean for their future.

“Okay, you’re on speaker,” said Becca. “Are you both there?”

“We are,” said her mom.

“I’m here.” Her dad sounded wary.

“Hi there, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor. I’m here, too. This is Jacob.”

“Hello,” said Becca’s mom.

They waited, but her dad didn’t speak.

“I’ve told your dad that you two are living together.”

Jacob swallowed, wishing that Becca had told them herself before they’d found out through other people.

“And what happens if it doesn’t work out?” her dad asked.

“I have other properties,” said Jacob. “I promised Becca before she moved in that if things didn’t work out between us, she’d have a place to stay.” He smiled at her. “I needed her to know that moving in with me wouldn’t make her dependent on me.”
