Trick held his gaze for a long moment. “Thanks, boss.”

“Yeah.”

By the time they got back to the house, Jacob was ready to have that drink with Slade. He didn’t want to take all night about it, though. He was tired. He’d love to talk to Becca before he went to bed, but she’d said that she was going to some farewell party for an old friend tonight. He frowned. He hadn’t managed to talk to her since he left yesterday. Between the funeral, and her being home with her family, they hadn’t found the time. She’d answered all his texts, but he hoped that everything was okay. He got the feeling that it might not be. Then again, maybe he was just imagining it because he missed her.

He poured himself a Cognac and another one for Slade.

“Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.”

Slade raised his glass to him. “Here’s to you and Becca. I hope everything goes well with her folks tomorrow.”

Jacob smiled. “Me too.”

“She’s already made this place better. I’m looking forward to her being Mrs. Jacobs.”

Jacob gave him a wry smile. “She’ll run things very differently than the last Mrs. Jacobs did.”

Slade nodded but didn’t answer. It wasn’t fair to expect him to – he could hardly say anything about Jacob’s mother.

“Have you talked to Becca today?”

“No, we’ve been texting but …” He shrugged.

“Never mind. You’ll see her tomorrow.”

Slade tipped his glass and downed his Cognac. “I’m guessing that you’d rather get to bed and get to tomorrow sooner than sit around shooting the shit with me. So, I’ll leave you to it.”

Jacob cocked an eyebrow. “Is there somewhere else you’d rather be?”

Slade smiled through pursed lips. “Are you telling me that you really don’t know?”

“Where you’d rather be?”

“Yeah.”

“I could hazard a guess.”

“Go on then.”

“Willow?”

Slade grinned. “You got me.”

“I thought, maybe. But …”

“Go on, ask me anything you want to know. It’s only fair. I’ve given you my two cents’ worth about you and Becca.”

“Are you guys … just for fun, or …?”

Slade shrugged. “I have no idea. We were just for fun whenever she came home to visit, but now she’s home for good and …”

“And she wants more than that?”

“If you want to know the truth, I’m the one who wants more than that, but she’s not sure. And even if she were sure – can you imagine her mother approving?”

“Hm, I’m sure you could win Alexandria over.”
