Russ laughed. “Your mom’s already warned me about that. But it’s okay, I’m up for it.”

It was late by the time they got back to the estate. Alyssa was tired, but she was glad that they’d gone. She’d been a little surprised that Bentley had left her to hang out with his mom while he went off with her dad, but it had worked out well.

She liked Ria; she liked her a lot. And she loved her for how happy she made her dad. She’d enjoyed spending time with her this afternoon. They’d had fun, sitting out on the deck overlooking the lake and just chatting. She couldn’t remember ever spending an afternoon like that with her mum. She pushed that thought away quickly. Her mum was a different kind of person, that was all, and Alyssa was hoping that she might have found her own – different – kind of happiness with Alvaro.

“Do you want a drink, or do you want to go straight up?” Bentley asked when they reached his wing of the house.

Alyssa laughed and reached for the door of the office. “I think I want to hang out in here and… Oh!” She gave him a puzzled look. “It’s locked.”

She’d never known that door to be locked before. She loved to hang out in the office, and he knew it. She loved to sit at the big desk with her laptop and stare out at the beautiful view instead of working. She also loved to sit on the formal-looking, but still very comfortable, sofa. There was a big painting on the wall opposite. It was a massive thing, probably five feet square, she enjoyed staring at it from the spot on the sofa, but it wasn’t something that she could get lost in. It was one of those historical paintings. It was probably worth a huge amount of money, but it just didn’t do it for her.

She shook her head to clear it, realizing that she was still staring at Bentley, wondering why the office was locked. She’d been hoping to drag him in there to take advantage of the sofa for something other than admiring the artwork.

He cupped her face between his hands and laughed against her lips as he kissed her. “Don’t look so disappointed. I’m having some work done in there.”

She raised her eyebrows. “Some work? What are you doing?”

“It’s a surprise. Can you trust me? I promise I won’t make you wait too long.”

She sighed. “Of course I trust you. And it is your office, after all. I just wanted …” She ran her hands down his sides and around until she grasped his butt and pulled him against her. “I think you know what I wanted.”

She shivered when he nuzzled his lips against her neck. “I know exactly what you want, Lizzie. And I want it too.”

He took hold of her hand and started leading her up the stairs toward his bedroom. “But after being back in Summer Lake today, I’m feeling kind of nostalgic.”

When they were inside the bedroom, he closed the door behind them and pushed her back up against it. A sexy smile played on his lips as he looked down at her. “I was thinking that tonight I might fuck you against the door, Lizzie.”

Happiness bubbled up in her chest as she laughed. “Oh, I like the sound of that, Lee. And then there’s the shower, and the dresser, too.”

He was already pulling her skirt up around her waist, and she was fumbling with his button and zipper. Who cared that the office was locked? They had plenty of other options.

The next morning, Bentley awoke early and lay there, watching Alyssa sleep. She was so beautiful; it made his heart clench in his chest. And she was all his.

He brushed her hair away from her forehead and leaned in to press a kiss to her temple. He wanted to wake her and carry on with more of what they’d been doing last night. But she needed her rest, and now that he thought about it, this was his perfect opportunity to call her mom.

He quietly slipped out of bed. Alyssa turned, and her eyelids fluttered, but he let out the breath that he’d been holding when she settled back down. Hopefully, it wouldn’t be long before he could come back and join her, but he wanted to talk to Julia while he had the opportunity.

When he reached his kitchen, he checked his watch. If he remembered rightly, Mendoza was four hours ahead. So hopefully, she and Alvaro would already be up and going about their day.

He closed the kitchen door and reached for his phone.

“Hello? Bentley?” she answered.

“Yes, hi Julia, it’s me. I hope it isn’t too early to call.”

“No, it’s fine. In fact, it’s lovely. How are the two of you doing?”

“We’re doing great thanks. Listen, Alyssa isn’t with me. I wanted to call you myself. I want to ask you …”

Julia let out a little squeal that made him hold the phone away from his ear for a moment. When he brought it back, he heard, “Yes! Of course, you have my blessing. That’s what you’re calling to ask, isn’t it?”

Bentley had to laugh. “Yes, it is. So, I take it you’re happy about it?”

“I couldn’t be happier. And I have some news of my own. Can you tell Alyssa to call … Oh, no, wait. You can’t ask her to call me because she doesn’t know that you’ve called me. And if you tell her, she’ll want to know why. Okay, forget that. I’ll call her soon and talk to you both. But I have wonderful news.”
