She certainly sounded happy when she said, “In fact, if you like, we could have a double wedding.”

Bentley sat down at the kitchen table. He couldn’t imagine anything that he would like less.

He was relieved when Julia laughed. “Don’t worry, I won’t push for it if you don’t like the idea. And besides, you’ll probablywant to get married there at your place. And I think Alvaro wants to have our wedding here.”

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you, and the same to you. She’ll say yes, Bentley. I know she will.”

He had to smile. The possibility of Alyssa saying no hadn’t even crossed his mind.

“I’m going to have to go in a minute. But thank you for calling and asking me. That means a lot, Bentley. I wasn’t sure if you would do it.”

“Of course, I understand that it means a lot to you. And it’s important to me that you should be happy.”

“Oh, I am, I’m happy about so many things. Wait, did you speak to Robert?”

He smiled. “I did. Thank you for putting me in touch with him. He was able to help me out. He helped me find exactly what I wanted, and that means everything will be the way I want it to be by the time I ask her.”

“That’s wonderful. I think she’ll love it. But listen, I have to go. I’ll call you guys soon.” She giggled. “And don’t forget, you have to act surprised; Alyssa can’t know that I already told you – that we’ve spoken to each other.”

“Okay. But do me a favor and call her soon? She’s been worrying about you, and I’m sure she’ll be happy to hear your news.”

As he ended the call, he hoped that Alyssa really would be happy to hear Julia’s news. But he wasn’t going to worry about it, he was more interested in going back upstairs to join her.

Chapter Twenty-Four

Alyssa pulled her coat tighter around her as she hurried down the sidewalk toward the Bayside Media offices. She really didn’t want to be here. Bentley had been good about it. He’d been very understanding, saying that he respected her need to see through what she’d started.

She wasn’t so sure that she understood it herself anymore. She’d spent the last couple of days in the offices at DuPont Wineries. She was really enjoying working there. Between the three of them, they’d agreed that it was better that Willow should be her point of contact.

It wasn’t that she and Bentley had any issue working together. On the contrary, the few times she’d sat down with him to talk business, Alyssa had wished that more of her clients could be like him. She could see that he was good at his job and understand why he was so well respected by his staff. But she wanted to feel that she was there on the merit of her work, not because the two of them were together.

As she waited to cross the road, she knew full well that she’d rather be in Napa with them than spend the next several weeks working here. She was of two minds about whether she should tell Trent Pearson that the moment they sat down. She felt bad about it, but he hadn’t exactly been respectful of her time so far – he’d already rescheduled this meeting twice.

She reached to pull her phone out of her purse when she felt it buzz.

Bentley: I’m thinking of you. I hope it goes well.

Alyssa: Thanks. At this point, I think going well would mean that they say no.

Bentley: You already know that’s what I think, but I’m not supposed to say so.

She had to laugh at that. He was so sweet.

Alyssa: I’m there now. I’m going in. I’ll let you know as soon as I’m done.

Bentley: OK. Reaves and Ollie are waiting at the airport, ready to take you home.

Alyssa: Home! I like the sound of that.

Bentley: So do I. You know that’s what I want. I love you.

Alyssa: I love you, too. I’ll text you when I get out.

She couldn’t stop smiling as she rode the elevator up to the Bayside offices. She was really hoping that this meeting would be short, that Trent would say no, and she’d be able to go straight back to Napa and get on with her life.

That was how it felt; her life was there now with Bentley.
