“Commission won’t let him kill me, her, or the baby.”
“You get a whole year to draw him out and get your revenge. Meanwhile, baby and wife are off limits. Take him out and you could take over the entire city. Maybe run for mayor yourself. How’s that for revenge? Get the cops on your official payroll instead of the unofficial one. Take out every single one of his businesses and pocket all the profits.”
“You’re sure Anna’s coming here?”
“Cab’s going to drop her at Gibson’s Mill, and I’ll arrange another to bring her out here.”
“Good thinking. Don’t want a city cab knowing my location. Arrange the wedding for next week while you’re at it.”
“I’m still arranging the funerals.”
“Just get it done.”
“All right, but you better stay there for now. The cops think you started the fire. They’re still looking for you.”
“Commission will keep them away from the funerals, right?”
“They know the rules, Marco. You just stay hidden for now. Make sure you don’t let the girl out of your sight when she gets there.”
“When’s she due?”
“This evening, by my reckoning.”
“That gives me time to get the house ready. I’ll tell the staff to watch her closely, make sure they know how important it is that she doesn’t escape.”
I talk through a couple of details about our city businesses, but not for long. My mind is already elsewhere. I can picture the look on Piper’s face when he sees his heavily pregnant daughter come walking into his house.
Maybe I can time it during one of his press conferences, maximize the publicity. Then I can sit back and watch his carefully laid out plans for the cartel merger crumble into the dirt.
They might get mad enough to take him out themselves, save me the trouble. He’ll die knowing his bloodline is gone. I’ve replaced it. The ultimate revenge will be mine.
Once I’m done on the phone to Alessandro, I gather the staff together, let them know what to do when Anna gets here. It doesn’t take long. They’ve worked for my family long enough to have a sixth sense about such things.
Her stay will be comfortable, as long as she behaves.
All that remains is for me to marry her and then get her pregnant. It has to be in that order. The commission only protects those who follow the rules.
A married woman in one of the families gets pregnant. She is protected from harm for the duration of the pregnancy and the first year of the child’s life. Husband too.
No one would dare break the commission’s laws. They don’t give second chances to rule breakers.
Once I’m done giving orders, I head for the gym at the back of the house. An hour’s workout to clear my head is what I need right now.
When that’s over, I’ll have her room prepared ready for her arrival.
After that, the fun begins. She will marry me. She will have my child, no matter how long it takes to get her pregnant. She’ll be shut off from the world until the test comes back positive.
This way, I make sure Piper doesn’t snatch her away from me. I will not risk losing the best shot I have at the perfect revenge.
I like to think my parents are looking down on me right now, approving of my plans. Sophie too.
I will avenge them all for what happened.
All I need now is for Anna to get here.
