“We stick with things how they are.”

“So what does she know?”

I skewer another piece of steak. “I told her we are enemies, and I told her why. She thinks the marriage and pregnancy are the entirety of my plan.”

“So she’s no idea you’ll be sending her back to him?”

“None at all.”

He looks at me funny, chewing slowly.

“What?” I ask.

“You got feelings for her?” he asks.

“Anyone else asked a question like that, I’d have them shot.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No, I haven’t got feelings for her.”

“Because if you did, that would complicate things, Marco.”

“Are you not hearing me?”

“I guess not.”

“I would never have feelings for someone with Piper blood running through their veins.”

“You still need to be nice to her. Treat her gently, get her believing you like her.”

“I don’t do gentle.”

“Yes, you do.”

“Yeah, right.”

He takes a sip of wine. “You’ve seduced a lot of women in your time, Marco. I never once saw you threaten any of them.”

“I haven’t threatened her.”

“You’re keeping her locked up here. The threat is implied.”

“Your point being?”

“Keep your temper in check. Be polite. Treat her like the women you’ve seduced in the past. Make her warm to you. Then she’ll be putty in your hands. She’ll fall for you and be only too happy to marry you. Maybe you could keep the baby when it comes, have an heir for your empire.”

“How much of that have you had to drink?”

“I’m just saying, you’re the wrong side of thirty. Time isn’t on your side for starting a family from scratch.”

“Now, you’ve really lost it, Alessandro.”

“Think about it.”

I drain the last of my glass. “I have a lot to think about already. How’s the wedding coming along?”

“It’ll be ready but she must walk down the aisle willingly for it to be legal.”
