“You’re telling me. I didn’t even know you had a boyfriend. Who is he?”

“Ricardo Bianchi.”

The line goes silent. I hear her take a sharp intake of breath. “As in the Bianchi famiglia? As in the mob? Are you married to the mob?”

“We’re having a baby, Mom.”

“Oh, sweet Jesus. You’re pregnant?”

“Yep.”

“How pregnant?”

“Seven weeks give or take a day or two.”

“Well, that I was not expecting. I tell you what, that explains why you’re father’s being an ass.”

“He thinks I’m making a mistake marrying Ricardo. What do you think?”

“Do you love him?”

The question seems so sudden. My mom is always making jokes. She doesn’t tend to do serious. I’m not sure how to answer.

“Because that’s all that matters,” she continues. “You love him, everything else follows. You don’t, well, maybe your father’s got a point.”

“I’m not sure, Mom.”

“You better be sure if you’re having a child together.”

“I know I feel differently about him to any of my other boyfriends.”

“You’re my innocent little girl. You never had boyfriends. You just stayed at home reading at night. Right?”

“You believe that if you want to.”

“I’ll talk to your father. He’ll come around. He’s a proud man. He won’t be happy that he’s having to take money from you. It’s not like a sugar Daddy kind of thing is it?”

“Mom! Eww, no.”

“Good. Just checking. I mean if it was, maybe you could rinse him for a few million for me. I could do with a new bathroom. Redo the kitchen maybe when I get out.”

Another call comes through on my phone. “I’ve got to go. Someone’s ringing me.”

“All right, sweetie. You take care and I’ll give you a ring tomorrow.”

“Night, Mom. Love you.”

“Love you too.”

I hit the answer button and it’s Ricardo talking down the line to me. “You better get here fast,” he’s saying, sounding like he’s in pain.

I can hear Albert yelling in the background. “She doesn’t need to see this. Keep her there. Hang up, damn it.”

“We’re at the club where you sang,” Ricardo says to me. “There’s a driver out front of the house. Come quickly. Don’t let him stop for anyone.”

“What’s going on?”

“I’ve been stabbed. You could be in danger. I need you here where I can keep an eye on you.”
