“Then I kill him and walk away.”

“Just like that? Kill him and walk away.”

“You’ll be safe. I’ll send word to Morgan when it’s done. He’ll arrange for you and Sophie to go back to Grant’s Hollow. I get the feeling good things will follow.”

“What good things?”

“Word is that it’s your father’s Will in the box. I’m guessing if your uncle wants it so badly, it’s because you’re supposed to inherit the lot.”

“How do you know that?”

“It’s an educated guess until we get the box open. Could be about fifty million you’re going to get. How’s that feel?”

“I won’t touch a cent of his money. It’s blood money, steeped in death. How do you think I feel?”

“Lucky. You could do a lot of good with that money.”

“I have moral standards, unlike you. I left my family because it disgusted me what they did to keep their wealth.”

“Then you’re stupid. I talked around Grant’s Hollow. Your kindergarten will shut soon without a funding injection.”

“You had no right to pry.”

“Stop being stubborn.”

“What?”

I sit up straight, liking the anger flaring in her face. Makes me want to spank the sass out of her. My cock twitches at the sight of her fury. “The people who died to get that wealth will still be dead whether or not you touch it. Find some charity to give it to if you feel so self righteous about all this. Found a load of kindergartens. Let people bring their kids to yours for free. Do what you like, but don’t waste this opportunity. People would kill for that kind of cash injection.”

“People like you, you mean?”

“If you like, yes. I’ve killed for money. I’m guessing that makes me a bad person in your mind.”

“You don’t think you’re a bad person?”

“You don’t know a thing about me. You don’t know why I do this.”

“For money, you just said.”

I shake my head. “You believe what you want. I never pegged you for this stubborn. Got to say.”

“Stubborn? How am I stubborn?”

“You get an idea in your mind and it’s fixed there. I ghosted you because I’m a piece of shit. I do this job because I’m a piece of shit. I’m guessing you think I’ve got some ulterior motive for killing your uncle. What do you think it is, going to steal all that cash from him? Change the Will so I get it all? Is that what you think?”

Her shoulders slump and she looks like she might cry. I want to take it back, but my blood’s up. She knows nothing about me. No clue about Isobel, about why I do this.

“I didn’t think that,” she says after a few seconds. “But I know something for a fact.”

“Pray, enlighten me.”

“You have got an ulterior motive to all this and if it’s not money, I don’t know what it is.”

I don’t give away my reaction. She’s no idea how close she is to the truth. I’ve given away too much to her. That’s not good.

I pick up my wine and taste it. “Not bad,” I say, setting the glass back down. “I’m going to take a shower.”

I head through to the bathroom and strip out of my clothes. I climb under the hot water and let it run through my hair. This might be the last one I ever take. A lot is riding on what happens tomorrow. There’s a chance I won’t come out of it alive. I need to maintain one hundred percent focus at all times. I need to not be thinking about Clarissa or Sophie. About my family.
