“You cooked for us?” Jack sounds surprised.

“Called out for it. You see me cooking?”

“I guess not.”

I watch Sophie playing and my heart sinks. She’s such a good girl. All this travel and she just gets on with it. Morgan smiles at her, then looks at me. “Made up Charlotte’s old cot for her upstairs. Picked up a new mattress. Don’t worry. Cleaned the wood as well. It’s all good.”

“Thank you. I appreciate it.”

“Mind if I borrow Jack for a while?”

“Be my guest.”

The two of them head out of the room. I continue to watch Sophie playing with Mr. Bear, feeling sick to my stomach about what Jack and Morgan are discussing. I can’t hear them, but I don’t need to.

They’re planning the best way to commit murder while I watch my daughter happily play with a doll’s house and her favorite teddy bear.

“How is she?”

I look down at Clarissa. She’s sitting on the edge of the armchair, tugging at her sleeve, looking nervous.

“She’s fine,” I reply, sinking down onto the couch opposite her. “Fast asleep.”

“Really? How did you manage that so easily?”

“Didn’t do much of anything. Just carried her through, told her it was bedtime, rocked her for a few minutes and then put her down.”

“Clearly a man of hidden talents.” She slides a glass of wine my way. “Got time for one before you go?”

“I don’t have to leave for another few hours.”

“You are still going ahead with the plan.”

“We don’t have a choice about this. It’s you or your uncle.”

“Couldn’t you get him arrested?”

“I don’t understand why you want him to live. Son of a bitch has got no qualms about killing you.”

“Murder is wrong, Jack. It just is.”

“Every time? What about the guy trying to snatch you from the hotel? Preferred I’d let him go with a fierce talking to?”

“He was directly threatening to kill me.”

“So’s Vincenzo. All right, so he might not be pulling the trigger, but he put the contract out. He stands to gain from your death. If I let him live, you die. I can’t put it any plainer than that.”

She sips at her wine, scrutinizing me. “So, what are you going to do?”

“You really want to know?”

“Talk me through it. How are you going to do this?”

“It’s simple enough. I have a meeting arranged with him at the bank tomorrow morning. I give him the key and the fake finger and watch him open the safe deposit box.”

“Then what?”
