She walks through to the kitchen and a moment later Clarissa emerges from the hallway. She freezes in place when she sees me. “Jack?” The way she says the word makes it sound like she’s not sure I’m real. “Is that you?”

“Why’d you threaten to go to the authorities?”

“Nice to see you, too. What are you doing here?”

“Imelda wanted me to warn you off talking to the Feds.”

“Or what? You kill me?”

“You still think that’s who I am?”

“Who are you if you’re not a hitman?”

“Been trying to figure that out myself. Why’d you threaten to talk?”

“Why’d you put all that money in my account?”

“What money?”

She picks up her phone off the coffee table, loading her banking app, showing me the screen. “Two million, deposited yesterday. Don’t give me the bullshit about it being in the Will or Imelda doing it. I don’t buy it. I know she was covering for you.”

“I didn’t put that money there.”

She holds up a finger. “Don’t lie to me. Just don’t.”

“I’m not lying.”

She surveys me. “Shit, I think you’re telling me the truth. But if you didn’t put the money in my account, who did?”

It hits me at once. “Imelda.” I shake my head, working it all out. “She told you she put it in there?”

Clarissa nods. “Yeah, but I thought she was covering for you.”

“She set this whole thing up.”

“Set what up?”

“She thought I should come and talk to you.”

“She did?”

“Thought we could work all this out.”

“Work what out?”

“This. Us. She kept telling me to come over here and talk to you.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because you told me to stay away. I listened. I have had nothing to do with your family or the organization since I left the country. Not a thing.”

“So when I demanded she take the money back or I go to the Feds, you had no idea what I was talking about?”

“That’s not how she worded it to me. She told me you were going to the Feds out of the blue. Shit, I should have guessed I was being tricked.”

“So what do we do now?”

“I go back to Milan and you carry on with your life.”
