“Got to be worth a try, hasn’t it?”

“Yeah, I reckon so.”

“You’re not going to kill anyone else, are you? I mean, if Kevin gives you the wrong change at Bud’s or anything like that?”

“I’m officially retired.”

“Good.”

“I’m sorry about Vincenzo. I didn’t mean for him to get killed.”

“What happened? I only got told he died in prison.”

“Boasted to a load of Bratva men that he was still in charge. They showed him that meant nothing in lockup.”

“Any idea where my mom ended up?”

“Italy. Imelda gave her a pension of sorts and told her not to come back. As far as I know she’s settled out there, running a bakery or something. Funny how life turns out, isn’t it?”

“Maddy left a bakery to come here and my mom left the States to run one. Is that irony or coincidence? I’m not sure? What’s happening with Isobel?”

“You’re telling me. So I guess it all worked out all right. But what about Isobel?”

“She has a therapist working with her. Treats her like a grandma. I’ll send for them both in the morning. If you’re sure about the spare room.”

“Of course I’m sure. I’m looking forward to meeting her. Do you think she’ll get on with Sophie?”

“We’ll just have to see, won’t we?”

I nestle in closer, my body still throbbing with the aftereffects of what we just did. “I’m glad you came back,” I tell him quietly.

“Me too,” he replies. “Needed to remind you who’s in charge around here.”

“Oh, you did that. I’ll be feeling it all day tomorrow.”

“That’s what I want.”

“What?”

“For you to always be thinking of me.”

“Have been since the day we met.”

He leans down and kisses me gently. “Love you,” he says.

My eyes widen as I look at him. I see only truth in his eyes and the sight makes me happier than I thought possible. “I love you too.”

Sophie and Isobel walk down the aisle, holding hands. They both beam at me. Sophie’s confident with her walking now, not falling over every couple of steps like when I first met her. Isobel is standing tall too, making eye contact, her therapy working well.

I wait for them to reach me, watching as they toss rose petals to the floor, most of them hitting the guests in the pews. More people chuckle, even the representatives of the organization, their stony faces cracking at the sight of these two causing chaos.

Maddy chuckles as petals hit her full in the face. Imelda is beside her, doing her best not to laugh. Sophie beams at me. “I do good?”

“Yes, honey,” I reply, waving her forward. “Keep going though.”

She’s started spinning all the spot, tossing petals into the air. Next to her, Isobel is giggling, jumping up and down. “What was I doing?” she asks, her brow furrowing.
