“So, this is it then?” Herod grumbled. “You’re involved with the human?”

“It’s not-”

“Spare me the excuses, Adreax. I’ve known you too long to listen to your lies. If that is your choice, then so be it, but remember this moment when it’s time to leave and you have to choose between us.”

Herod stalked out of the room, and I wondered if there was a reason for him bursting in. He didn’t give us any news or announcements about the Patrol, so it must not have been anything pressing. However, it occurred to me that the two of us might have been a little too loud during our lovemaking, and perhaps we had drawn his attention.

Adreax pulled his pants up around his waist, straightening himself as he paced around the tiny space.

“Don’t listen to him, Tayla. There will be no choosing sides,” he assured me.

“I—Are you sure?” I asked, suddenly wondering at the implication of his words.

He stopped and leveled his gaze at me.

“I am always sure.”

“But, what does that mean for us? What are we?”

He frowned as if considering the question for the very first time. It was true; we had never discussed what kind of relationship this was. All we had was a few intense kisses and a lot of heat. But were we a couple? Were we trying to be anything more than two bodies, sweaty and grinding together? I didn’t think either of us knew the answer.

“We are whatever you want to be, Tayla. I would like to call you mine. I want you nearby.”

That was a pretty stunning admission for me to hear from the man who had caused me so much distress since landing on my Orb. But before I could think any better of it, my lips were moving, and I heard myself saying things I had never been brave enough to admit before.

“I want you, too, Adreax. I want you to have me.”

He nodded firmly, as if that settled everything, and headed for the door. “Then let me deal with Herod.”
