Chapter Twenty Five

Adreax

Late that evening, I watched Tayla get up from the cockpit and make her way back toward her sleeping quarters. I wanted so badly to follow her, but I couldn’t. Herod was still at my side, watching my every move and passing judgement. When she drew close, I stared down at my feet and pretended I didn’t notice her, even though I caught the scent of her as she walked past and my body reacted instantly.

It was no good. No matter how many times I told myself that we were wrong for each other, I couldn’t resist the memory of her wrapped around me, panting in my ear and begging me not to stop. Knowing that we were destined for calamity only made her that much more enticing.

I stayed where I was, talking over escape routes with Herod and examining the little cache of weapons we’d saved. If the time came when we had to defend ourselves, at least we would have a few options at our disposal, and that would have to be enough. Besides, I was grateful for something to keep me busy while I waited for time to pass, not knowing how long we might be here.

“It’s getting late, and we’ve already oiled these damn things three times. Come on,” Herod rose, stretching his arms overhead until his back crackled and waiting for me to join him.

Together we went to another small sleeping cabin, separate from where Tayla and Alec had made their beds. We crawled onto our narrow bunks and laid back. As long as I was here, Herod would know that I wasn’t putting him last, and that seemed to mollify him somewhat.

Within minutes, I could hear the rumbling sound of Herod snoring. I stared straight up at the ceiling. The longer I laid there, the more restless I felt, and finally, I started listening to the rise and fall of Herod’s sleeping, waiting to see if he would wake.

Satisfied that Herod was deep in his dreams, I carefully sat up and crawled out of bed. I crept to the door and paused, waiting for the next big snore before I pulled the latch and let myself out.

As soon as I was in the hallway, I hurried toward Tayla’s cabin, sliding the door aside and letting myself in without a moment’s hesitation.

“Who-”

“Shh,” I hissed, going to her side.

In the darkness, I could only see the vague outline of her body, sitting up in surprise, but I didn’t need to see anything else. I knew what I wanted.

“Be quiet and let me have you,” I whispered into her ear, and my hand went between her legs, pushing her panties aside and probing at her sex.

She sighed, arching into me, and muffling her moans as best she could. I didn’t have any time to waste. I wanted her, and I was going to have her, even if it was the last time. I pulled out my cock and slid it along her slit, gathering her wetness until I could slip inside her in one smooth movement, burying my shaft all the way inside of her.

She was getting louder, and I had no choice but to place a hand over her mouth, holding her noises in as I moved against her, leaning over her body and pressing against her. She didn’t resist, just as I knew she wouldn’t.

I slowed my movements, working inside her, and removed my hand from her mouth.

“We shouldn’t,” she started, but I cut her off with a kiss, forcing my tongue between her lips and tasting her.

“I don’t care what they think. I will have you whenever I like.”

She exhaled softly and rolled her head back, exposing her delicate throat to me. I dove in, kissing and biting under her jaw and down her collarbone, arriving at her luscious breasts. I rolled one nipple between my lips, flicking my tongue over and around it in widening circles.

Last time, I had been so eager to take her, I hadn’t taken the time to appreciate all the supple curves her body had to offer. This time, I wanted to take my time exploring all the ways her beautiful body could please me. Her objections had long since ceased, and now she rewarded me with tantalizing moans and sighs every time I ran my hands and my tongue across her skin.

I never stopped, sliding in and out of her wet pussy, enjoying the way she lifted her hips to meet me and tried so hard to keep me from pulling back, only to collapse as I withdrew my length and teased her opening. I could have continued all night long were it not for my body’s building arousal. Before long, I was past the point of no return, and I leaned down to her, covered her mouth with my lips, and came inside her again, filling her until I felt completely drained, and her body quivered against me.

I wished I could stay. I wished I could curl up beside her and feel her head on my chest again, the way she’d been when I first awakened that day. But I had to return to my bunk before Herod awoke. I could not afford his suspicions now.

With one last kiss, I breathed my goodbye to her and wished her sweet dreams, telling myself this would be the very last time.

As I let myself back into mine and Herod’s cabin, I locked the door tight before crossing back to my bunk. I was so distracted by the lingering scent of Tayla’s arousal clinging to my body, I didn’t even notice the stark silence of the room. I lowered myself onto my bunk, satisfied, when Herod’s voice rose out of the darkness.

“So it’s going to be like that, is it?”

I froze, realizing too late that he was awake.

“Just went for a walk,” I tried, scrambling for any plausible excuse for my absence.

“This is the last time I’m telling you, Dre. You’re like a brother to me, but if you don’t cut her off, I want out.”

“Out?” I stammered, shocked by the request.

“Yes, out. I want my half of the money from this run, and I’m out.”

“Herod, you know I don’t have that money to give you.”

“I know. That’s why I’m prepared to make you a deal. You sign over the Greedy She-Devil to me, and I’ll walk out of here as soon as I can. When you finally deliver the rest of the goods, you can keep whatever payment you get from the boss, and you can keep your little girlfriend, too.”

My heart was racing. Herod’s words cut me straight to the bone. He was really prepared to end our working arrangement over Tayla. Countless years spent fighting side by side was drawing down to a painful negotiation. I could hear the betrayal in Herod’s voice, the disbelief that I would put him in such a preposterous position. Even with Tayla fresh on my mind, I felt the swell of remorse inside me.

Herod was my brother. It was insane for me to think that Tayla could ever be a substitute for the loyalty that Herod had given me over the years. I owed him my life many times over, and there was no way I could walk away from that now. And he was asking me to give up my only possession in the entire world, the Greedy She-Devil, the ship that had bought my freedom. It was an impossible ask, and he knew it.

He was no longer asking me to end my games with Tayla. He was flat out telling me that this was my last chance to choose, and it left me gutted. I didn’t even know why I cared so much. How could I possibly feel as strongly for her as I did for Herod or my ship? The truth was, I couldn’t. When I really searched inside myself, I realized that so many of my feelings for her were borne out of the madness of the situation we found ourselves in. If it weren’t for being held prisoner, or being shot, or crashing on this strange planet in the first place, I couldn’t guarantee that my feelings would stand. If I had met her under any other circumstance, I couldn’t promise that I would want her the same way.
