“Hang on. Let me scan it. I want to know what it is.”

“We really don’t have time for this,” he complained, but I ignored him.

Patrol or no Patrol, I needed more information about these strange orbs. I pulled up another screen and placed the yellow orb in my focus. My scanner started working, and I waited impatiently for a reading.

Inconclusive.

“Bring us closer.”

“Closer?” Herod asked, disbelieving. “Dre, the Patrol is about to eat us alive. We can come back after we lose them.”

“You heard me.”

He snorted with disapproval, but did as I commanded. We made a slow turn, our last remaining engine working overtime to haul our battered ship toward the mysterious objects. I felt a pang of guilt. I shouldn’t be looking for more trouble when I already had more than my fair share, but I couldn’t resist. Whatever made these orbs warranted investigation, and when I checked our surroundings, I noted that the Patrol ships were keeping their distance now, too. Odd. Were they afraid of the orbs?
