“What? Of course not! It was awful. Terrible. Worst ever.”

August studies me some more and then shakes his head. “Be careful, yeah? Sem’s…different.”

“I know.I know. Ugh. I’m so stupid. Why did I have to go and have sex with him? Twice?”

A voice clears behind me, and August and I quickly swivel around. My jaw unhinges, and my face is almost as bright as that strawberry smoothie I had for breakfast. Because this is just my motherfucking luck.

“Oh shoot,” I mutter when I see Colin standing behind us, his lithe body shifting uncomfortably before us.

“Sorry to interrupt, but you…um…you left your keys,” he holds out his hand, and I see the lanyard I use for the school in his palm.

“Oh. Thank you,” I say, grasping onto them. “I can’t believe I left those. I’m so scatterbrained today.”

August chuckles next to me, and I bite back a scowl.

“No problem,” Colin says, his soft brown eyes meeting mine. They look so kind and mature and so unlike Sem’s bright blue, mischievous ones.

Gah! Don’t think of Sem when Colin is right in front of you!

“I’m Colin, by the way. You are?”

He holds out his hand, and I slide mine inside his. His palms are smooth, unlike Sem’s, which are calloused and rough.

No more thoughts of Sem!

“I’m Magnus. And this is my best friend, August.”

“Nice to finally meet you. I’ve noticed you in class….”

“I’ve noticed you too,” I say way too enthusiastic and then add on calmly, “And it’s nice to finally meet you as well.”

I pull my hand away first and fiddle with my water bottle, needing something to do with my fingers.

“Hey, um, Magnus. I was wondering…Do you mind if I…” he runs a hand through his light brown hair, musing it slightly. He’s properly adorable. “Do you work at a school? I saw the lanyard’s logo and just assumed.”

“Yeah. A summer camp, actually. Kindergarten facilitator. August is with the third graders. We’re both finishing up our credentials for elementary education next year.” Okay, this is way too much information. Calm the hell down. I clear my throat and ask, “Why?”

Colin’s smile widens. “It’s just…it’s just a coincidence. I have a six-year-old at home.”

“Is that so?” I say, and August subtly nudges me.

“I’d love to pick your brain, actually,” Colin says, looking almost sheepish. “I’m considering creating an online vlog for teachers. Something along the lines of how to teach history to elementary aged children. Is that something you’d be interested in?”

“Absolutely!” I say, sounding much too cheery. “Anytime. Want my number?”

Colin bites down on his lip and nods. “Yeah. That would be great.”

We exchange numbers and then wave goodbye, my eyes on his delectable ass until he disappears into his car.

“You are so screwed, Mag. What were you thinking getting involved with Sem when you’ve been pining after Colin for months?”

“I know,” I groan and roll my neck. “Why does my brain short circuit when someone thinks I can’t do something?”

“Probably your shitty parents. Or those asshole brothers of yours.”

“It always comes back to them, doesn’t it?”

August shrugs, but he has a point. If my brothers weren’t so competitive and my parents so very disappointed in how I turned out, maybe I wouldn’t feel the need to prove myself to everyone.
