Page 115 of Until Him

It’s no wonder he was so bitter and distrustful when we met. I honestly don’t know how he came out of all that intact.

But I feel super lucky that he’s softening around me. He smiles more and just generally seems more content and relaxed. Like right now, he’s wedged between my legs, letting me hold him. Part of me expects him to start purring.

“You will do great,” he says, his voice a little sad.

Actually, come to think of it, he has seemed particularly anxious and a little down the past two days. I think it must be because of his dad.

It has to be hard to lose someone like that. Even though, from what I can make out, Sutherland was shit at being a father.

I rest my chin on his shoulder as Theo turns his gaze back to the book and continues to review chapters with me.

When we finish later that evening and I get up to leave to go meet Finn for dinner, Theo kisses me long and deep, his eyes a little watery, and he’s reluctant to let me go. I feel bad leaving him when he’s obviously feeling low, but I have to get some sleep for tomorrow’s test and I know that if I stay, I’ll be up all night touching him. I can’t keep my hands off of him.

“Hey, I’ll be over tomorrow afternoon. Then we can celebrate.”

He looks away and nods, his bottom lip clenched between his teeth.

I just cup his jaw and run my thumb along his cheek.

“And thank you, Theo, for believing in me,” I say and he nods again and then turns around completely, facing the window. “Do you need me to stay? ‘Cause I will…”

“No, it’s okay. You need to go, I get it. I’ll see you later, yeah?” He sounds like he’s okay but he still won’t look at me. Strange.

“Alright then. Goodnight.” I close the door behind me and make my way to my car. I’ll figure out what’s bothering him tomorrow. Right now, I need to focus on passing this bitch of a final.

I blink and then blink again. I rub at my eyes and then look again at the score on my computer just to make sure I’m not hallucinating.

Holy shit.

I passed!

Not only did I pass, but I got a motherfucking A.

I stand up so quickly that the chair hits the wall and I trip over my feet, but I barely notice. I’m fumbling with my phone and sending a quick text to Theo.

Me:I passed! I got an A.

Minutes pass and then he replies.

Theo:I knew you would.

Me:Fuck yeah!

My eyes get a little teary and I know when I see him again, I’m going to kiss him senseless. I’m going to strip him naked and then celebrate by fucking the daylights out of him.

But first, I need to tell my parents the good news. Oh, and Landon and Finn. My fingers fly across the screen as I send off messages, and they all respond back within minutes.

I’m so excited, I want to take Theo out to dinner to celebrate, so I send him a bunch of texts asking if he can meet me at the Italian restaurant later but after twenty minutes, he still hasn’t responded. Why isn’t he texting me back? I try calling but he doesn’t pick up.

He probably just got busy with school shit. Or Curie swatted his phone under the oven.

That’s a more likely scenario. I’ll just head over there and ask him in person.

I walk outside my building, staring at my phone, but my gaze is wrenched up when I hear my name called.

“Yo, Logan. Grab a bite with us!” Xander says as he throws an arm over my shoulder.
