Want pulsed between her legs. A soft moan escaped her as she felt the evidence of his arousal hardening against her side.

She shifted up on her knees. Her breaths came heavier as she pressed the paper harder to his middle, trapping it between them as she moved to straddle his middle. The paper crinkled under her hand as her fingers flexed and felt the firm shape of his abdominals.

She shifted her hips, carefully feeling out the movement to rut her sex against his, the sweet friction found together. She moved against him, almost whimpering at the pleasure of grinding against his cock.

Liam brought himself to sit up, taking the curve of her ass in his hands to guide her movements, his hands digging in hard enough to leave marks.

"Diane,” he murmured, his voice ragged with want as he kissed her neck. “Diane, I—”

The sound of his voice stopped her as quickly as if he'd caught her wrist. She stilled, pulling back a breath.

"No, don't say anything at all," she chided him. Talking meant they would resume their conversation about the future, and Diane just wanted to live in this moment as long as she could.

The way he looked up at her from the grass, want mixed with regret. His brow was knit together in concentration as he fumbled for words. “If you would just... tell me.”

Diane blinked. She had done nothing but tell him everything on her mind since they stole the carriage.

Liam sighed and chewed the inside of his cheek, eyes falling distant as he tried to put the words together.

“...If I could return to the church without fear you would disappear in the wind, I would retrieve your collection for you. If you would tell me you would wait for me and I wouldn’t lose you the moment I let go—”

Clearly he still felt the sting of her rejection, as the moment his words revealed too much of his heart, he cut himself off with another shake of his head, frowning at the overlong grass beside him.

Not for the first time today, lost in his embrace, forgetting the world around them, Diane put her hand to his cheek.

He leaned into her touch, sighing.

“If I am to decide to run away with you, wherever that takes us...” Diane started to say, tasting the words in her mouth. The mere thought did make her heartbeat pick up with impossibly romanticized notions of traipsing through Scotland with Liam, hiding from the rain with him in old abandoned castles, lounging in tall fields of lush green grass under a warm sun, sleeping at his side every night. The cadence of their conversation, the back and forth parry of their wits together, the opportunity to tease him as much as she liked, and to have more stolen kisses and brazen climaxes in dark corners.

She shook herself. She couldn’t talk herself into it based on silly imaginings.

“You’re asking me to choose you, but how can I really choose you if there are no other choices? How can either of us be happy with that? I don’t want there to be room to wonder for the rest of our lives, to ask if we would have done differently if only we could have.”

Liam held her gaze, the knot in his brow unfurrowing slowly. For a moment, Diane thought her words were just adding to the damage she had done in the street, and that she ought to apologize.

Diane sighed and folded up the page, tucking it into the edge of her stays. Then she slid off of her knees, her butt landing on the damp earth. She rolled over to lay next to him in the grass. Perhaps for the first time in hours, her gaze left Liam, turning up to the sky.

"It grows late," he said, breaking their perfect silence.

The moment had passed, and they were detaching themselves from one another.

Liam offered her a hand to help her to her feet, but as soon as she was upright, Diane separated herself from him. She busied herself, brushing bits of grass from her skirt as she turned away from him.

She crossed the hill back towards town, stopping at the fence post to untie their goat.

She was so lost in her own thoughts again, she had untied the lead before she realized it was attached to nothing.

The end was chewed through, and their little goat was gone.
