“Lux!” her mom shouted.

Lux turned, and I swear there was an unspoken clash happening between the two women, one I didn't understand. And frankly, I wasn't ready to deal with it. She took the flowers and clutched them to her chest a moment. "Thank you for bringing me flowers," she said quietly.

"Of course," I said and nodded.

"I'll be right back. I'm just going to put these in water." She smiled, but it faltered. "Don't go anywhere, okay?"

"I won't," I said, that feeling of protectiveness pricking my heart.

"Promise?"

I could see she remembered what I'd said yesterday about keeping my promises.

"I'll stay right here."

Her smile beamed brighter, and I was a goner.

She went back to her mom. Together they walked inside the house.

I stood there like an asshole for probably five minutes until she returned.

Her cheeks were rosy, but her jaw was resolute. Whatever the tension between them, Lux still wanted to hang out with me.

“Ready.” I held out my arm for her to take.

Instead, she reached for my hand. "More than ready."

I laced her fingers with mine, working to control the odd sensation of comfort settling in my veins. At the same time, a warning bell jangled loud in my head. Was I ready for a relationship? Lux wasn't a one-night stand. "I'm guessing you don't get picked up by guys a lot at the house."

She laughed. "You have no idea." Her gaze roamed over my face. "You look nice," she added.

We reached the passenger side of my truck. "You think?" I glanced down at her and opened the door.

"I mean, it isn't your tee shirt and jeans, but it'll do." There was laughter and teasing in her voice.

Her playfulness, the anticipation of spending time with her, and the delicious tension between us balled up into one incessant need. I wanted to fucking kiss her.

"Lux," I said, pressing her against the passenger seat.

"What is it?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.

I didn't care that her mom might be watching from the window. If I had to wait a moment longer to taste her, I would go insane.

"I'm going to kiss you," I said.

FOURTEEN

Dirty Kisses

LUX

A shotof need jolted from my heart and straight to my core at his statement. The air shifted between us, and the darkening sky seemed to creep in closer as his gaze zeroed in on my mouth.

"If you don't, I'll never forgive you," I said, sucking on the inside of my cheek. It was going to happen—my first kiss. I was more than ready.

Rush's fingers brushed my jaw, a featherlight touch that ran around my ear and then down my neck.

My mouth parted, a little sigh of warmth creeping between my lips.
