Chapter 23

Saxton~

I stared at the text and knew that there had to be a story behind it, and it probably wasn’t a good one. Kincaid not only stayed out of my love life, but she also would never offer unsolicited advice about it. The girl really was Switzerland when it came to who was in my bed. So, for her to have sent me this text, that could only mean a conversation had been had, and it’d been enough to make Kincaid uncomfortable.

Babe: Hastings needs sum reassurance. I’ve made myself scarce

Me: Where r u?

Babe: I’m not at the condo, and that’s all u need 2 know right now

Me: Ur an asshole

Babe: Ur a dickface

I laughed. Christ, Kincaid was something else. However, she wasn’t wrong. If there was something wrong with Hastings, then I needed to see what was going on. Besides, it wasn’t like Kincaid couldn’t take care of herself. Plus, if there were something wrong with Kincaid, she would have come out and told me.

Me: Bcuz ur an asshole

Babe: Handle ur business, Voss

I had one more class before my afternoon break, but if Hastings was upset, that took precedence. Besides, I knew that Hastings had three afternoon classes today, so if I didn’t hurry up, I was going to miss her.

Making my way to their place, I let myself in with the code Kincaid had given me on the day that she had moved in. While Kincaid swore by the building’s security, what good was it when you could just give the code out? It was something that we had argued about for over three weeks before I had finally shut the fuck up about it. Kincaid’s name protected her a lot, but at the end of the day, I still worried about her, but I had to pick my battles when it came to that girl.

It took three knocks before the door finally swung open, and when Hastings saw that it was me, her eyes widened. “What are you doing here? Don’t you have class?”

“I do,” I admitted. “However, a little birdie told me to get over here and handle my business. Want to tell me what that’s about?”

Her shoulders sagged, and she looked genuinely upset. “I think…I might have ruined things with Kincaid.”

My back straightened at that. “What?”

Hastings opened the door to let me in. Once I was inside, she shut and locked the door behind her. “I think I might have screwed up,” she answered.

“How?”

“I asked her how she felt about us dating, and instead of accepting her answer for what it was, I pushed,” she muttered quietly.

“How so?”

“She…she was explaining how close you guys were and the dynamics of your friendship, and I…I was just in such awe of something so special that I said something stupid.”

My brows drew inward with concern. “What did you say?”

“I-” I watched her swallow her nervousness. “I…uh, said that you were always going to pick her over me.”

Now I could see why Kincaid had texted me. This was more than Hastings needing some reassurance. This was a little deeper than that, and it sucked. It sucked because I must have done something wrong for that thought to even cross her mind.

“And why would I ever have to choose between you and Kincaid?” I finally asked.

She rushed over to me and grabbed my arms. “You wouldn’t,” she swore. “I’d never make you do that. I…I was…feeling insecure about what we have being so new, and…I don’t know.” She shook her head, and she looked genuinely upset. “I’ve never had a friendship like the one you have with her, and I just…I don’t know why I said it, I swear. I-”

I took her face in my hands. “Baby, it’s okay-”

“No, it’s not,” she cried. “I adore Kincaid but that doesn’t matter now. Now I’m that girlfriend who…who tarnishes friendships. It doesn’t matter that I love you. Kincaid’s going to-”

“You love me?” I asked, interrupting her meltdown.
