Chapter 16

Kincaid~

It was almost ten o’clock, but I didn’t feel bad. Besides, I had texted Saxton to let him know that I was on my way. If he and Hastings had been busy, he would have told me so, and I would have respected that.

He was also very aware that I’d just snuck out of Fox’s bed, leaving him passed out after the afternoon we’d just had.

Christ.

After that sordid display behind the hotel, I’d done exactly as Fox had demanded. With no shame knocking at my conscience, I had followed him to his place, and the insanity had continued up until about an hour ago when he had finally passed out on me.

When I had crawled out of his bed and taken a shower, it had surprised me that he’d slept through it. However, knowing that he must really be passed out, that’s when I had texted Saxton to tell him that I needed to talk to him. When he had texted back to tell me it was okay to stop by, I’d gotten dressed, then left Fox asleep in his bed.

Of course, I had stopped by my place first, showered quickly again, then changed into some proper attire, I had headed on over to Saxton’s. Being my best friend, I had no issues with showing up on his doorstep without any makeup on or my hair thrown up in a bun.

So, now I was knocking on his door, doing my best not to freak the fuck out.

When he opened the door, I could tell that he knew. That’s what was special about our friendship. We really did know each other best.

“Ah, babe…” he sighed before opening the door wider, so I could walk inside.

I watched him shut and lock the door behind him, a worried look on his face, before I lost it. His strong arms were around me before my knees could give out on me. I wasn’t sure how long he held me there, but Saxton didn’t say a word as I purged years and years of old hurts. Not only what I did to Fox, but everything that’s been consuming since my brother’s death.

Through the tears, I felt him walking us over to the couch, and eventually, we were seated, his large body still trying to protect me from myself. He didn’t tell me that it was going to be okay. He didn’t tell me that I was wrong. He didn’t tell me that I was right. He didn’t say anything. He just let me cry with no judgement.

When I was finally able to rein it in, he reached over towards the coffee table, and I choked out a knowing laugh at how he’d had a box of tissue already waiting.

“Where’s Hastings?” I asked as I did my best to clean my face up.

“She’s in the room,” he answered softly. “She’s reading.”

“You guys sure know how to party it up on Halloween,” I teased quietly.

Saxton sat back against the armrest, then pulled me close to his body. He had his arms wrapped around me from behind, his chin resting on the top of my head. “What happened?” he asked, not letting me avoid the subject any longer.

“Well, you know how I was going to pay Alexander a little visit today?”

“Yeah,” he replied. Again, there wasn’t anything that Saxton didn’t know. We were on this mission together, so I made sure he knew every move that I made.

“I was coming out of Alexander’s room, and guess who was on his way to speak to Alexander himself?”

“He told me that he was going to see Alexander tonight,” Saxton informed me. “He was going to Curtis Barker’s party tonight, so he said he was stopping by on his way there.” I felt his arms tighten around me. “If I’d known that he was going to go during the middle of the day, I would have warned you.”

I let out a deep, tired, shuttered sigh. “I don’t even know if it matters anymore, Saxton,” I told him. “There’s a reason that I did my best to stay away from him all this time. Every interaction since the initiation, no matter how big or small, was just another shake in the foundation, you know. We were bound to…implode.”

“And how do you feel about that?”

I laughed at that. “Did you miss the epic breakdown that I just had? Christ, I can’t remember ever crying like that. Even when Apollo died, anger had seen me through most of it before revenge had taken over.” I sat up, then looked over at my best friend. “I feel exhausted, but…also recharged. Like…I’ve gotten that little moment of weakness out of my system, and now I need to get back to handling shit. I mean, I pulled a knife on Alexander. I can’t stop now, Saxton.”

His brows jumped high on his head. “You did what?”

I sighed with a smile playing on my lips. “I pulled a knife out on Alexander.”

Saxton grinned. “Okay, tell me everything.”

So, from the second that I broke into Alexander’s room to showing up on his doorstep, I told him everything. Of course, I left out the sexual details, but Saxton knew how I felt about Fox.

When I was done, I added, “And don’t think you’re off the hook for ratting me out.”
