It was a good thing that I hadn’t chosen that moment to take a drink of my coffee or else Saxton would have been covered it in.

What in the hell?

“Are you fucking serious?” I finally asked. “I mean-”

“The file that Stone’s PI put together had pictures, babe.”

“Yeah, but…in this day and age, that doesn’t mean anything,” I reasoned. “Photos are doctored all the time.”

“True,” he agreed. “However, do you seriously think Stone’s PI would be dumb enough to cross Stone Lexington? If nothing else, he has nothing to gain from that. He’d lose Stone as a client if not his life.”

I sat there, absorbing the magnitude of such a secret. If it were true-and I had no reason to think otherwise-Alexander’s favoritism made a whole hell of a lot of sense now. This went beyond them just being family friends or doing business with Donald and/or Helen Remington. This kind of scandal would ruin both Donald and Alexander. While mistresses were an acceptable part of their lifestyles, members’ wives and husbands were off-limits. Love was a sticky emotion, and affairs within the organization were dangerous. Men have fought wars for the love of a woman, so it’d be nothing to topple an entire clandestine group of powerful men because someone had fallen in love with the wrong person.

Plus, you also had the whole gay aspect of it all, which normally wouldn’t be an issue, except that the men in question were married to straight women.

Holy fuck.

“Wow,” I muttered, unable to articulate much more than that.

Saxton chuckled. “Yeah, pretty much.”

“So, what’s the plan now? I mean…not to be a dick, but this shit is like striking oil.”

Saxton grinned. “We’re going to give Alexander until tomorrow to present his report on August,” he answered. “If we’re not satisfied with it, then we’ll move on from there.”

“But we’re still killing August, right?”

He let out a full-blown laugh. “Christ, you’re a bloodthirsty little thing.”

I slapped his arm. “Stop it.”

After he settled down, he said, “Yes, we’re still getting rid of him. He deserves if after what he did to my wife. Plus, Stone won’t sleep well until Rylee is safe from the bastard on all fronts.”

I shook my head. “Christ,” I muttered. “Talk about a full plate.”

“No shit,” he huffed.

“Alexander’s the key to it all, though,” I said. “I’m certain of it.”

“I think you might be right.”

“Okay, well, just keep me in the loop.” He shot me an offended look. “Sorry, sorry,” I chuckled. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

Saxton just shook his head. “Look, we have something else we need to discuss, babe.”

“I thought we already agreed that we had a full plate? What now?”

“Your man’s not very good at hiding that rage he’s been nursing for three years,” he said, surprising me a little. “While he might know that there’s never been anything romantic between us, he’s not taking my place in your life very well. Fix it, Kincaid. Even if you’re not ready to tell him the truth about everything else, you need to explain our friendship to him. He deserves that bit of security after everything you’ve put him through.”

Well, hell.
