Chapter 21

Fox~

Instead of smothering Kincaid on Sunday, I had opted for staying at my place again. Even if it had been warranted, I couldn’t force myself on her. Kincaid Black wasn’t submissive. Oh, she might exhibit some signs when I was buried deep in her pussy, but she wasn’t made to cater to any man, no matter how she felt about him.

So, I could recognize that my demand that she ask permission to come and go had been a bit over the top and...well, quite frankly, insane. Though, I still stood by my demand, it was obvious that I had needed some space from what the fucking girl did to me. So, I’d spent the night at my place again, hating every fucking second of it.

Still, considering what a jacked-up night I’d had, my two morning classes had gone well. Sometimes, it was hard to grapple with the fact that we still had classes to fucking attend. It’s only been a month since the initiation, but it’s been one hell of a fucking month.

“Fox?”

Why?

Why, Lord?

I stopped walking, then turned to face Alexis. I had thirty minutes before my next class, and I’d been hoping to find Saxton and make sure that he was keeping it together. We were all on babysitting duty, but it was warranted. No one would blame Voss if he killed August in broad daylight.

“What?” I asked, not curbing the bite in my voice.

“Where were you Friday night?” she asked, and her audacity had me momentarily stunned. “I waited all night at Curtis Barker’s party, and you never showed. You didn’t answer any of my texts, either.”

After a few seconds of astonishment, I said, “None of your fucking business.”

She feigned some hurt, but I wasn’t buying it. “You made me look like a fool,” she continued, and it was like we were having two different conversations. “I told everyone that you were showing up.”

“Then that was you making a fool of yourself,” I pointed out. “I told you that I’d see you there, but I never promised anything.”

Her hands hit my chest as she pressed herself against me. “Fox-”

“What the fuck are you doing?” I snapped as I grabbed her wrists and threw her hands off my chest. “Don’t ever invade my space like that again, Alexis.”

“Look, I know what the contract stipulates, but it’s not real, Fox,” she said, further surprising me. “Besides, who’ll know if we fool around a bit. It’s not like I’d ever say anything.”

I ran my hands through my hair, then down my face.

This couldn’t be happening.

Finally, looking at her, I asked, “Who said that the contracts weren’t real? Because I can assure you that they are very real, Alexis.”

“Well, Laney said they were guidelines more than they were rules,” she answered, and Laney Spinner was done for. I would see to it myself. “When I told her that I wished those stupid rules didn’t exist, she said we wouldn’t get in trouble for sleeping together. She said that there’d be nothing more than a strict reprimand because the organization couldn’t afford to lose you as an initiate.” Alexis shrugged like the clueless twit that she was. “The more I thought about it, the more it made sense.”

God, how could I have chosen so wrong?

“If you want to believe Laney Spinner, then be my guest,” I spat. “Just don’t forget what happened to Jennifer Polk because she’d chosen to believe Laney.”

Alexis rolled her blue eyes while flipping her blonde hair back. “That’s because Jennifer was too stupid to respect the rule of privacy. She made a fool of herself attacking Ross in public.”

Even if I’d wanted to, there was no stopping my next words. “You’re the stupid one if you believe that,” I told her. “Laney Spinner is setting you up, Alexis. If you can’t see that, then I definitely chose the wrong person as my supporter.”

Her eyes widened. “Don’t say that,” she bit out. “I’m perfect for you, Fox. Besides, there’s no rule against you not marrying me after-”

“Marry you?” I choked out, horrified at the very idea. “Alexis, I don’t know what you think is going on here, but I am not interested in you.” It was time to choose brutality over honesty. “That’s the reason I chose you in the first place. There was no threat of me becoming attracted to you, so you were safe.”

She looked hurt and offended, but that really wasn’t my problem. While I didn’t normally go around being a dick, this girl was making it impossible to be decent to her. Besides, the very last thing that I needed in my life right now was for Kincaid to think I had something going on with Alexis. Though I was certain that Kincaid would believe me over Alexis, it’d be easy for Kincaid to decide that she didn’t need the drama and try to walk.

Over my fucking dead body.

“How can you say that?” her voice tilting more towards offended than hurt. “Don’t you dare stand there and tell me that I’m not attractive enough to grab your attention, Fox Harrington.”
