“You’re a dick, Cole,” Taylor remarked before grabbing her briefcase from the floor beside her. “Instead of praising Kincaid for keeping a level head and protecting herself, you’re mad because she’s not swooning in your arms like a fourteenth-century damsel in distress.”

I stood with her, smiling at both detectives. “Good times, really.”

However, whether it was because she really was bored or because she liked drama, before we could turn to walk out of the interrogation room, Taylor leaned in and said, “Or was that what you were hoping for, Detective?” I looked over at her, intrigued. “Let me give you a little tip, when you’re dealing with people who have more money than God, keep in mind that nothing is off-limits.” She paused for dramatic effect, and it worked. “Including your reputation as an officer of the law.”

Detective Cole stood up, his face red with anger. “If I were you-”

“She’s a very beautiful girl, isn’t she, Detective Cole?” Taylor taunted. “Unfortunately for you, she’s also very strong and capable.” Taylor straightened to her full height. “Still, even if she weren’t, her boyfriend is Fox Harrington.” She threw him a condescending wink. “While you might be nice to look at, Detective, you’re no Fox Harrington.”

“You bitch,” he hissed through clenched teeth.

“Come near my client or her friends again without probable cause, and I’ll show you a bitch,” Taylor fired back. “Have a great day, Glen.”

We turned and walked out, and as soon as the door shut behind us, Taylor looked over at me and winked. “Men are stupid.”

I burst out laughing, but that quickly came to an end when I noticed my parents rushing my way. With my mom and dad both wrapped around me, I felt a lot better than I had a few hours ago. The only person missing from our family hug was Apollo.

And Fox.
