Chapter 12

Fox~

I’ve had hangovers before, but it’s been so long that I’d actually forgotten how awful they were. My head was killing me, and I foresaw everything getting on my nerves today.

Despite the drama currently in my life, last night had been fun. Not wanting to ruin a good vibe, I hadn’t objected when Marley had dragged us to a bar where one of her friends worked. We had ended up getting a good booth in the corner of the bar thanks to her connections, and it’d been fun. The bar had been big enough to throw in a DJ and turn it into a club after nine.

Lots of drinks and food later, I’d gotten to know Marley better, and despite the heartbreak that I was currently experiencing, I had loved hearing about how they’d met from her perspective. She was obviously in love with Josh, and his sexual preference wasn’t an issue for her. Marley wasn’t worried that she couldn’t give Joshua what it was he found in men because, for her, it was all about love. No matter what your sexual preference was, love was what kept you from cheating, and that’s how she saw it.

When her friend had gotten off shift, I had immediately felt uncomfortable, hoping that there weren’t any setting-up vibes happening. However, she hadn’t asked me if I had a girlfriend or anything like that, so I just figured that she had come along for the party ride. It wasn’t that I thought every girl on the planet wanted me, but I wasn’t ignorant of my last name. I never have been. However, the night had been a good one, my killer hangover notwithstanding.

After washing my face and scrubbing my teeth clean until they bled, I shuffled my way towards the kitchen. The smell of coffee felt like an angel’s chorus, and I prayed that there was enough for a few more pots, because I was pretty sure that I was going to need them.

As soon as Joshua saw me, the dick smiled. “Hey there.”

I flipped him off as I took a seat at the kitchen table. “I’ll pay you a million dollars for that cup you’re pouring.”

His smile widened as he placed the cup on the table, then slid it my way. “A million dollars? That’s something to think about.”

Ignoring him, I took a sip of the hot addictive, and I would have chugged the entire thing if I had been positive that it wouldn’t set my esophagus on fire. “God, I needed that.”

Joshua took a sip of the second cup that he poured before saying, “Hungover, I take it.”

I eyed him. “Dude, I don’t think I’ve been this hangover since freshman year.”

He chuckled. “Ah, those were the days, no?”

I didn’t comment on that. I had spent my freshman year in a drunken or high altered state because of Kincaid, so those weren’t good memories for me. I hadn’t partied to make the most of the college life. I had partied to try to forget, though it hadn’t worked.

Like last night.

“So, where’s Brit? Letting her sleep in?”

My head reared back at that, my coffee almost spilling. “How the hell would I know?”

Joshua’s brows jumped. “I thought…” He cocked his head. “She didn’t come home with you last night?”

This time, my brows jumped. “No,” I answered. “Why would you think that?” Granted, I’d been drunker than shit last night, but I hadn’t been that drunk.

“Well, when you guys agreed to share an Uber back here, I just assumed that it’d been code for hooking up.” Joshua and Marley had wanted to get some after-hours tacos, but I’d been too drunk to join them. So, instead of going with them, Brit had offered to share an Uber with me home.

“Are you insane?” I asked. “No way would I hook up with some random girl. Like I don’t have enough problems with Kincaid without dragging some one-night-stand into the mix?”

His lower lip jutted out in a confused pout, his brows furrowed. “But…the pictures-”

“What fucking pictures?” I could feel my hands begin to tremble a bit, and it wasn’t from the caffeine.

Joshua slowly placed his cup on the counter behind him, and he looked spooked, which wasn’t a good sign. “Uh, there are some…uh…suggestive pictures from last night-”

I was up and around the kitchen in a heartbeat, ignoring my hangover. “What?” I stuck my hand out for his phone. “What are you talking about?”

Joshua’s fingers were flying across his screen, and that could only mean that the pictures he was talking about were posted to social media. “We were all tagged on them.”

He handed me his phone, and my stomach turned so violently that I was surprised that I hadn’t thrown up everywhere.

Brit had tagged us in picture after picture, and though each picture showed nothing between us, the couple angle looked back at me in those pictures. The pictures looked like a good time, and to be fair, we had been having a good time. However, it hadn’t been until I’d gotten past a few of them that I saw a selfie of Brit with me in the background, and the caption read, ‘Caught me a Fox’.

My hands were shaking when I gave Joshua his phone back. “This can’t be happening,” I muttered to no one in particular.”
